My parents gave me the Africa bug by taking me on safari aged 17. After that the bank of mum and dad dried up, and I started travelling on my own in 1994, on an overland truck. I have managed over 20 trips to Africa since then, in increasing levels of comfort as I approach middle age.
In 2010 I took a whole year out to travel around Africa. In that year, I volunteered in Tembe elephant reserve, dived in Sodwana Bay, hiked the Wild Coast and worked in safari camps in Botswana and South Luangwa, Zambia. Of all the places I've travelled in Africa, it is South Luangwa that has most captured my heart from my very first visit in 1994. I love the wildness and being able to explore the bush on foot and be a part of it rather than an observer.
Other favourite destinations are Ruaha in Tanzania and the Okavango Delta and Linyanti in Botswana.
These days I try to go on safari as often as my annual leave allowance allows, so I can usually squeeze in 3 trips a year.
