About Byron Bay
If stunning beaches, world-class surfing, and majestic national parks sound like your ideal vacation, set your sights on Byron Bay. Make yourself at home in your choice of Byron Bay vacation homes, and enjoy one of Australia's most beautiful stretches of South Pacific coastline.
Byron Bay Climate
Byron Bay's warm weather makes it a year-round vacation destination. In the summer, temperatures generally reach the low 80s, though they can dip down into the mid-60s during the winter. Weather in spring and fall tends to be mild, with highs in the mid-70s. Fall is Byron Bay's rainy season, and the area receives about eight inches of rain per month from March to May. The rain tapers off in the late winter and early spring, however, and September is typically the driest month in Byron Bay.
How to Get Around Byron Bay
If you're flying in from elsewhere in Australia, you'll find Ballina Byron Gateway Airport to be the most convenient place to land. From New Zealand or Southeast Asia, fly into the Gold Coast Airport, which is just an hour away from Byron Bay. Public transportation options are relatively limited in this area, so plan to get around on foot or by car. Many Byron Bay vacation homes are within walking distance of the waterfront and other major attractions, but you'll need to drive to reach some of the larger parks and reserves.
Best Things to Do in Byron Bay
Start your visit with a trip to Byron Main Beach, the most popular in the area and one that's known for smaller waves. For some of the area's best surfing, head to the Pass on the south side of Byron Main, Watego's Beach further south, or Tallow's Beach south of the Byron Headland. At the very edge of the Byron Bay area, Cape Byron State Conservation Area is home to a historic lighthouse, walking trails, and whale watching spots. On the south side of Byron Bay, Arakwal National Park is home to Tallow Beach, indigenous culture, bird watching, fishing, and picnicking.
Can't-Miss Byron Bay Events
No matter which season you choose to visit Byron Bay, you'll have the chance to join in a number of popular music festivals. Perhaps the best known annual event in Byron Bay, the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival has rocked this area for more than two decades. Also known as Bluesfest, this multi-day celebration includes an impressive lineup of established stars and up-and-coming blues musicians. Held just outside Byron Bay each winter, Splendour in the Grass hosts the latest local and international pop and alternative musicians, along with handicraft vendors, theatrical performances, and local food. To see some of Australia's best indigenous culture in a single venue, get your tickets for the Boomerang Festival, which includes music, dance, visual arts, film, and much more.
