About the neighbourhood
It is best to rent a vehicle to get around here...we can offer advice and some short distance driving ourselves if needed......we can also arrange for a PERSONAL DRIVER that will give you worry free transportation to all your destinations at affordable prices.

Driving:
As a tourist, you can drive a car in Costa Rica provided you have a valid driver's license. If you plan to rent a car, you will be required to buy basic insurance. Ramping up to "full" coverage can get pricey, so check with your credit card company as some offer coverage for certain occurrences (for example, collision).
You can rent GPS devices from your car rental company, but performance has been reported as sketchy, depending on where you drive. If you have a cell phone that you plan to use here (see separate section), there are several apps that can be used to provide trip guidance. Google Maps and WAZE are both good options. WAZE is especially helpful as it is crowd-supported, and in Costa Rica, it is very popular. This means that a large number of users will be updating road information at any point in time.
Distances in Costa Rica can be deceiving; road conditions, traffic and weather can all influence drive times. What looks like a thirty minute drive on a map can turn out to be hours. It is best to consult with locals before heading out, especially if your route is off the beaten path and even more so in the rainy season.
Driving habits in Costa Rica are different than those in North America. Drivers may or may not obey the rules for the yellow lines that divide the road, and they will overtake on an uphill or close to a blind corner. Always drive defensively here.
If you plan to drive off the main highways, rent a 4 x 4 SUV…period. What starts as a paved road can turn very quickly into a gravel or dirt road. This is a hilly country and a sedan will not handle secondary roads well. Yes, you will see Costa Ricans driving on some of these roads, but they are accustomed to it and they don't have to be concerned about paying rental car damage penalties. Don't drive along the beach in Costa Rica. It is not only illegal but your car insurance will be invalid if you drive on the beach or ford rivers.
As a vacationer, driving after dusk is not recommended unless you are very familiar with the area. Lots of people walk, ride bicycles and scooters and there may not be reflectors on the bicycles or lights on the scooters. In a lot of the smaller towns and villages, unofficially, everything and everybody on the road has priority over cars, SUVs, trucks etc. and they will not necessarily scramble out of the way of your vehicle. Then there are the dogs, the odd horse or two or herd of cattle that you might encounter on the road. They too have the right of way. Roads outside the towns or villages are not lit, and even in the populated areas the lighting may be poor.

Cellular Phones:
Some car rental companies will rent you a cell phone but they tend to be older models, coverage may be spotty, and most likely not be smart phones. You can bring your own phone to use with wireless for emails etc. but phone calls will be very costly unless you have a service like Magic Jack or equivalent. If you bring an unlocked cell phone that is compatible with operating frequencies here, you will be able to buy a chip and a prepaid voice and data package quite inexpensively. To verify if your phone will work in Costa Rica, you can check out operating frequencies here. Costa Rica has 3G and 4G service.

Internet:
Internet access has exploded across Costa Rica in recent years, and many restaurants and almost all places offering accommodation will have free WiFi. Bring your tablets and stay connected with friends and family back home.

Electricity:
All of Costa Rica has electricity of 110 volts, AC. In most places, the sockets are 2-prong. If it works in North America, it will work here.

Drinking Water:
Water from taps is safe for drinking all over

Costa Rica. Time Zone :
Costa Rica is on Central Standard Time and does not observe daylight savings time.

Weather:
Costa Rica is in the tropics and to many of us that means hot, and at the coast that holds true. But Costa Rica is also mountainous and changes in elevation bring different temperatures. There are twelve different climatic zones in Costa Rica. That means that temperatures, rainfall and humidity will vary depending on location. Though it is never really cold here, unless you plan to hike up Irazu Volcano (3432 meters) or Chirripo Peak (3820 meters), you can feel cold with the dampness in some areas. If you plan to travel around, layering is a good idea. Include a sweater or sweatshirt, long pants, rain jacket and closed shoes along with the shorts, T shirts and sandals.

High and Low Season:
Services in the tourist areas in Costa Rica vary quite markedly between the high and low seasons. Some businesses may close for portions of the low season or reduce their hours of operation. It is always good practice to confirm that hotel/resort restaurants or tours etc. are in operation during these months.
The high season, which is the dry season here and winter in Northern climes typically runs from end of November to end of April. The other months are considered the low season and coincides with the rainy or green season. . It is always warmer on the coast than inland.
The green season normally brings smaller crowds, cooler temperatures and the lush landscapes return. Mornings are sunny and the clouds roll in around mid afternoon though not necessarily bringing rain. In the early part of the dry season, if it does rain, it lasts for a relatively short period of time though this changes as October approaches. Mid-September through October is considered to be the height of the rainy season. There can be a lot of rain.
