About the neighbourhood
Apart from the artistic and historical treasures to be discovered, there are local festivities and events in every little town. To mention just a few, the donkey race in Torrita di Siena is accompanied by processions in medieval dress and an impressive flag waving performance, and the yearly barrel pushing contest up the streets of Montepulciano in August is immensely popular. At the internationally acclaimed Teatro Povero di Monticchiello where residents take part in an open-air theatre in the summer , local cooking can be sampled in the evenings in the crypt of the church. Last but not least the wonderful countryside and picturesque streets of the little towns make this a walker's paradise.
Getting around
This area has been inhabited since pre-historic times, followed by the Etruscans (900 BC) and the Romans. Montepulciano offers some wonderful examples of renaissance architecture and is home to one of Italy;s most famous wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Other nearby places of interest are Pienza, with its renaissance buildings and pecorino cheese, Bagno Vignoni with its hot springs and roman bath, both in the world heritage site of the Val d'Orcia, and Cortona above Lake Trasimeno. Siena, Florence, Perugia and Rome can all be visited by the day. Wine tastings at local wineries are possible, an outing in the woods searching for truffles with a local expert (subject to seasonal conditions), cooking classes are available on request
