About the neighbourhood
Villereal, just a couple of kms from The Cottage, is a 12th Century Bastide town, and a focus of the local agricultural community. It has ancient grandeur along with a local market town presence. It's Saturday market (and Wednesday in summer) is worth the visit just to be part of it. The bars, cafe's and eating establishments around the town square are well worth visiting to watch the world go by with an excellent coffee, glass of wine or something from the plat du jour. The area surrounding Villereal is rural (the Cottage is located on an 17 acre international alpaca farm), and from The Cottage there are walks and rides through the countryside, or along the quiet rural roads. All country activities (bicycles, horse riding, fishing, golf etc) are close by, and for town life Bergerac and Villeneuve sur Lot are each 20 minutes away. Both with ancient picturesque town centres but with the trappings of modern living if you wish that. Also close are a lot of other Bastide towns (including the famous Monpazier with the excellent Bastide Museum). And more castles and chateaus than you would imagine. The little village of Born (where The Cottage is) is a tight cluster of ancient houses, and is a 'village bonne fleurie'. The locals take pride in their little village. Villereal hosts the local supermarket, and a petrol station along with other more general stores.
Getting around
