Les Horts is a small hamlet of mainly stone built houses perched on a south facing hillside overlooking the Jaur and Orb river valleys. This is a very quiet area with lots of outdoor activities; walking, climbing, canyoning, canoeing, cycling, golf, etc, but maybe just finding a quiet riverside beach or montainside view for a few days may be your dream. Here you will be spoilt for choice. If you love going to the local farmers markets and wine fairs that are a mark of French rural life then you will be in paradise. Our favourite market is St Chinian on Sunday morning but you will find Lamalou les Bains, Bédarieux or St Pons equally interesting. The Reds tend to be hearty and need to be drunk with a good meat dish, but they have developed over the past 25 years to be amongst the best. The Rose's are fantastically varied from pale pink to grey, dry or very fruity, great on a hot summers evening. Whites from the coast and Picpoul de Pinet up into the foothills of the Cevennes and the Marsanne and Roussane and Clairette grapes go from dry to sweet and siropy to be served, with fish or poultry or cheese or as a aperitif, enjoy! The Gorges d'Héric and the Caroux Espinouse mountains. The Caroux mountain is just over 1000 meters high, similar to Snowdon. You don't have to be a climber to enjoy the views. In the village of Mons you will find the entrance to the Gorges d'Héric a brilliant place to walk or swim with amazing, natural, Jacuzzi like pools of crystal clear, water. Héric is a tiny hamlet hidden at the top of the valley, an interesting walk on an easy path with wild mountain sheep, there's a small café where you can purchase a drink before the return journey. Orb and Jaur rivers. The rivers here have lots of access points where you can find a pleasant beach and a place to swim. The waters are clear and tested regularly. Canoes are for hire at Tarrassac, about 5kms from the house; You go downstream 5, 10 or 15kms and the bus brings you back to base with your canoe; don't forget some old trainers and the sun tan lotion! Mediterranean beaches: Approximately one hours drive away you will be on the coast with sandy beaches and warm water. Valras Plage is a family holiday town with a nice fish market and lots of seafood restaurants, a fun fair and through the summer free evening, concerts on the port side. Portiragnes and Vendres are long beaches with dunes and inland, salt water, marshes, lots of ponies and horse riding available and a few places to eat on the beach. The Millau viaduct and Roquefort cheese caves. One of the favourite trips out is to see the Viaduct at Millau, 2.5 kms long, 270 meters high, a visitors centre is situated nearby. Continue along the D992 to Roquefort and visit the caves of Roquefort and see how the cheese is made and aged. It is cold in the caves, take a jumper. Lakes. All around this area you will find lakes, Salagou, near to Clermont l'Hérault, Lac de la Raviège at La Salvetat sur Agoût, Lac de Laouzas and the Lac de Vezoles near to Fraisse sur Agoût, very nice places to go for a day out. The major towns and cities of this region are Béziers, Montpellier, Narbonne, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Nimes and Albi. All the towns have outdoor and indoor markets with fresh regional produce, hundreds of cafés, bistrôts and restaurants; in Montpellier discover the old centre with its winding alleyway's, in Carcassonne the mediavel city is a must and in Narbonne the old castle and cathederal. How To Get To Mons in Hérault, South of France and the Riviera The village is a kilometer from the D908 between the towns of Olargues and Lamalou les Bains .Water-fall. The owner of the house has a private waterfall and natural pool situated a few hundred meters from the house. The access is a little difficult but if you want to discover just ask and we will show you this wonderfull hiden beauty!! More
