Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Beautiful guesthouse, enjoy our vacation
My husband and I stayed at the Waiola guesthouse for 9 nights. We really enjoyed it. This was a wonderful place to stay, an overall wonderful experience. The house is bright, clean, and nicely built. David and Wendy are very nice and helpful, giving suggestions, providing delicious fruits and eggs. I really enjoyed limes there. It tastes very good. You should try it when u visit this place. The full kitchen had all the things you would have in your own house. It was quite from town, traffic jams and people. We had the pleasure of waking up to beautiful birds song every morning. Fresh air, beautiful view and u can see the ocean away in the distance. While its private, the main highway is still very close. It's easy to get there, and it's close to Point South and Green Sand Beach. We highly recommend this place those who like a peaceful vacation in beautiful area Jeab and Greg

Quaint, romantic cottage getaway in paradise.
Wonderful place to stay with a beautiful tropical country atmosphere. We stayed one week and wished we had been able to stay longer. We'll be back if only to visit the hosts, Wendy and David. They are great people and very helpful with ideas on daily excursions to different places around the island. Waking up to the sunrise, shared with the birds in the garden, the horse and donkeys in the pasture was a soothing retreat. The cottage is equipped with a complete kitchen, washer/dryer.

Outstanding
Truly outstanding place and hosts, probably one of the best places I have stayed in over 40 years of traveling ( from b & b to 5* + resorts ). If you want quite, super clean, couples retreat. Ideal place for our anniversary.

Most incredible vacation ever!
My husband and I stayed here for our 20th anniversary. We stayed for 8 days, wish it had been longer. So relaxing and comfortable. Fell asleep to the sound of crickets and woke up to singing birds. Wendy & David were great and very helpful, we enjoyed visiting with them. Very knowledgeable about the area. The house was amazing, so comfortable and had everything we needed to prepare our own meals. Thank you David & Wendy so much for making our 20th anniversary a memorable one. Beautiful retreat with wonderful hosts, will tell all my friends!
We just spent one night at the Waiola Guesthouse and Zen Garden. It was clean, tastefully decorated and roomy in the midst of abundant greenery with horse and donkeys grazing in the distance. Because it was on the second floor, I woke up feeling like I had spent the night in a treehouse, with trees waving through the windows. The hosts were warm, friendly and helpful with many suggestions of good places to visit and restaurant recommendations. We left well-rested after a very comfortable stay feeling like we had made new friends!

Best choice ever!
Upon arrival, we were welcomed warm-hearted by the owners who also gave us advice on where to go, what to see, how to get there and also provided us with fresh fruits during our stay! From the lanai you are overlooking a huge garden which is great to escape from the busy life at home. We did everything right when booking this lovely place!

A week in "old Hawaii"
After twenty nine trips to the mainland, spring and fall, our age has caught up with us making it difficult to take those long and difficult trips. So, we set out to see if we could handle shorter jaunts to the outer Hawaiian islands. We chose to go back to the Big Island, back to Naalehu for a week near South Point and a week in Kamuela (Waimea) where we lived for ten years after retiring. Both stays were delightful surrounded by much of “old Hawaii”. In all our trips to the mainland, we only wrote two reviews, both in appreciation of “Dean's Oceanfront Lodge” near Yachats Oregon. Now, we write a third for Waiola Guesthouse and Zen Garden near Naalehu that is exceedingly well run by Wendy and David V. They are most friendly and helpful without being in any way obtrusive. The guesthouse itself is much better than its description. It is a large upstairs studio, fully modern and very clean with a extensive veranda and two nice rockers. Windows all around looking out over a twelve acre pasture carved from the ancient Ohia forest. The ambiance is that of a well appointed tree-house. Wild native birds abound in the trees all around. Look for the Saffron Finch if you are feeling lucky. This property is totally “off the grid; yet, we never lacked for electricity and satellite TV service. Water is soft rainwater from a 15,000 gallon catchment and tank. Be sure to buy your food in Kona or Hilo, because supplies are very limited in Naalehu. We have been going for many years to the Hano Hou restaurant in Naalehu started by old man Taguchi; he is gone but it is still a great place for good seafood and banana cream pie. Aloha, Dave and Jean

Wonderful place to stay that is off the beaten path.
We just finished a two week stay at Waiola and enjoyed every minute of it. The apartment was comfortable, well appointed, and very private. The owners were always helpful and never obtrusive. While shopping and night life opportunities would be more plentiful in Kailua or Hilo, we never lacked for a market or a good meal in Ocean View or Na'Alehu ... and without the traffic, wait, or noise you would endure in Kailua or Hilo. The main entrance to Volcanoes National Park is about 40 miles (one hour) away, but one section of the park with great hiking is only a few minutes drive from the guest house. Black sand and green sand beaches are nearby as well.

About the neighbourhood
Waiola is a 12 acre 'gentleman's' farm with a zen view of the ocean. Na`alehu is a sleepy little town about 6 miles away toward Hilo with a couple of places to eat, a hardware store, bank, Union 76 gas station, post office, aesthetician/nail/hair salon, and grocery mart. There is a farmers' market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Ocean View is in the other direction and also has a couple of restaurants, 2 grocery stores, 3 gas stations, hardware store, business and computer service provider and a hair and nail salon. Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, Punalu`u Black Sand Beach and the famous Green Sands Beach at South Point are all in the neighborhood. If you want to experience off-the-beaten-track, peaceful and 'laidback' Hawai`i, Waiola is the place for you!
