About the neighbourhood
Most of Captain Cook is between the 800-foot (240 m) and 2,000-foot (610 m) elevation, which makes it ideal as a coffee-growing region. It sits on the top of an ancient fault which created the famous Kealakekua Bay. This Bay was considered the sacred harbor of Lono, the fertility deity of the Hawaiians in folklore. Prior to the 1960s, most of Captain Cook was part of the vast Kealakekua Ranch, founded in the 1850s by Englishman Henry Nicholas Greenwell. The town is named after Captain James Cook, the famed English explorer. The area has many local restaurants to choose from, a farmers market and a few local boutiques

How to get there
Airport: Kona International Airport: 32.0 km
Napo’opo’o is an incredibly scenic four mile, two-lane, paved, county-maintained road. It's fairly steep (about 10-15 degrees on average), and windy. It's gorgeous, but if you aren’t comfortable driving mountain roads, you may want to look at other options. Literature that suggests 4WD is necessary on the Big Island is out of date. The only two popular places an 4WD vehicle are necessary are the road down into Waipio Valley and the road between Mauna Kea information station and the observatories. However, most visitors to Waipio either view the valley from the top and hike down, or book tours. Mauna Kea information station is fantastic, and the end point for most visitors to Mauna Kea. The observatories are generally not open to the public anyway. Many tourists also enjoy organized... more
