My wife and I were looking for somewhere to escape to, yet still have easy access to our favourite places to visit in Devon and Cornwall. Hartsmead Cottage ticks the boxes on all counts. The Barn itself has everything you need for a comfortable stay...More

Spent a wonderful week here in the peace and quiet, recharging from life’s busyness. Hartsmead is spacious and generally well equipped for two people. The bed was comfortable and king size, a really important requirement for us. The kitchen and living area were well equipped...More

We had a lovely break at Hartsmead from the end of December into the new year. The accommodation was cosy and comfortable despite some fairly grim weather. Everything was as we had hoped – well equipped kitchen, great shower, super bed (we slept like logs)....More

What a wonderful couple to stay in our cottage. They really enjoyed our situation on the edge of Dartmoor saying that they visited many places from here. Our variety of birds gave great entertainment on the wet days and we really hope they will come...More

About the neighbourhood
We are ideally situated to take advantage of all that Devon and Cornwall have to offer including coastline, moorland and stunning countryside. Lydford has a pub with restaurant, a farm shop and a fine dining restarant as well as the National Trust Lydford Gorge which is well worth a visit. There are some excellent country house hotels in the area also offering excellent food and wine so you will be spoilt for choice! For walkers and cyclists, Hartsmead is next to a green lane that leads straight up onto open Moorland so no need to go on the roads and the Granite Way cycle path passes right in front of us. Our nearest town Tavistock is full of individual shops and a covered market so definitely should be visited.
Getting around
A car is a must in SW as there is no longer a train service but the bus runs regularly through Lydford and will stop outside our place if you hold out your hand. You can go to Tavistock then onto Plymouth to the south or through Okehampton and onto Exeter to the north.
How to get there
From the A386 take the road opposite The Dartmoor Inn signposted Lydford and follow this road straight through the village and out the other side. You will pass the Castle pub on your right then follow the road down to the first entrance of Lydford Gorge and up the other side. You then go underneath an arched railway bridge where the road turns sharply right. Our lane is about 300 yards on the left hand side opposite a couple of houses and there is a sign saying Hartswood. Continue up this narrow lane until it opens out at the top where there is plenty of room to turn round. Welcome, you have arrived at Hartsmead Cottage.
