It's joined to Lewis by a road bridge that was built in 1953 and has has recently been replaced. There is good access to the tourist attractions on the west coast of the island and around Uig. Stornoway is a 40 minute drive. Tarbert is about 60 minutes The house won the best architect designed house in the Outer Hebrides Design Awards 2016, beating other houses built in 2014 and 15 The site is framed by the loch in front of the house and the ridge behind, providing a picturesque setting and shelter from the weather. As you walk up the site, the loch opens up, revealing its "H" shape and small island in the middle. We're told that in dry weather it's possible to walk to the island over stepping stones from the southerly bank. The house is less than a mile from Bosta beach with its beautiful sandy beach and Iron Age house; we often walk there and back whilst the dinner cooks. At Breaclete, the main village on Bernera, there is a community centre with a cafe. In Kirkibost, there is an honesty shop with good range of local produce and everyday basics. DETAILS We've designed the house with the needs of the outdoor life in mind. There is a large entrance boot room and a secure external store room with plenty of space for wetsuits, drysuits, wellies, walking boots, bicycles or fishing equipment. The heart of the house is a large open plan kitchen, living room and dining room. The living room area is full height open to the roof and has a wood-burning stove with slate hearth. The whole area overlooks the loch with large floor to ceiling windows in the living room and dining room that open onto the patio. The kitchen has a full height fridge and a separate full height freezer so you can do a big shop on arrival in Stornoway. There is an oven, induction hob, microwave and dishwasher. The separate utility room keeps the noise of the washing machine and dryer out of the living areas. Local TV and mobile phone reception are poor so we have installed satellite TV and full fibre-to-the-premises ultra-fast broadband. Bernera is remote community selected for broadband funding by the Scottish Government. There is a Blu-ray/DVD player and a Bluetooth music player. Downstairs is a double bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms - one double, one twin, and shower room. The downstairs and upstairs bedrooms are separated which works well if you have two parties eg grandparents downstairs. The house is extremely energy efficient. An air source heat pump provides environmentally friendly heating and hot water. The main living area and bathrooms have underfloor heating, bedrooms have radiators. Please note that the house is strictly non-smoking and that we are unable to accept pets. Children are welcome although at the moment we don't have any baby equipment eg cot or highchair.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

Incredible holiday
The house is beautifully designed and superbly equipped and is a fabulous space to spend time in. The kitchen was fully stocked with all the equipment you could need and I loved the fact there was a large utility room with washing machine, dryer and space for a rack to dry beach stuff. There are stunning views from every room but particularly from the wall to wall windows in the living area that overlook the loch. It's a wonderfuly quiet location and only a five minute drive from the glorious Bosta beach, where we spent most of our time. We had a little trouble working the speaker but the owner response was so fast and helpful that we were soon sorted. In fact Sally's communication all along was excellent. The welcome basket was a wonderful arrival gift after a long journey. We really hope to return oneday.

The most spectacular house and location
I cannot recommend this house or Lewis and Harris enough. The house is amazing. The beds were very comfortable and it is incredibly well equipped. You have everything you could need. Sally and Norman are great hosts. Very helpful and provide lots of good ideas. The welcome basket is fabulous. Sitting out at night with a glass of wine was lovely. You can hear the water lapping from the loch across the road. It is a perfect location. There is a beautiful walk to Bosta Beach. A bit of a drive to Stornoway but a lovely drive with a great pizza place in the middle of nowhere on the way. We will be going back. If you are looking for a very special house in a different location then do yourself a favour and go here.

Lovely house, amazing location and a great place to base you explorations of Lewis and Harris.
We just came back from a great week staying at Loch View. The house suited us perfectly and is very much a luxury property. The spaces within the house and its garden were really conducive to relaxing, embracing the peace and quiet of Bernera while blowing you away with the awesome landscape. The house is well positioned to enjoy the amazing Bosta beach and also the Callanish standing stone sites. It was also easy to get down to Harris and to and from the Stornaway area when needed. We did a lot of sea kayaking around Bernera and little Bernera, snorkelling around Bosta beach area and also hiking on the amazing path that does a circuit of Bernera. From the house we would often get views of Golden Eagles both flying and on the ground! Amazing!

Absolutely perfect luxury cottage
Loch View is fabulous. A really well designed cottage set on the North side of a small loch with awesome views and lots of local wildlife. The cottage is very clean and very modern inside, with three double bedrooms, one en-suite and an open plan kitchen/dining/lounge space. There is a separate utility room with a washer and dryer and the kitchen is very well equipped with modern appliances. There is plenty of parking space too. The location is idyllic, it's less than a mile from the beautiful Bosta beach and you can walk for miles around Great Bernara without needing to drive at all. Access from the mainland (of Lewis) is good and the roads are in pretty good condition too. I have never been in a cottage of such high quality in build and location, it was truly marvellous.

Perfect stay in a remote location
We stayed one week August/September 2022 in this house. It was one of the best locations we visited. The house has a great view on the nearby loch and is in a walk distance from a beautiful beach. It has plenty of room for up to 6 people and is very well equipped. The kitchen has nearly everything you could imagine. Even good baking equipment is provided as well as some outdoor tableware to take to the nearby beach. Very good. We really loved staying there and enjoyed the silence. The looks in the nightly clear sky were absolutely breathtaking. I can recommend the Bernera walk which passes the house and a day trip to St Kilda. The booking experience was very good. Sally was very nice and clear in communication. Everything worked very well. The only issue I had was that I missed some mails in my SPAM folder. But even this could be dealt with very well. Thanks a lot to Sally. If possible we would definitely book again.

What a perfect house in a perfect spot
Beautiful house - real luxury and wonderful floor to ceiling windows across the loch. It had all we needed and very clean, new and comfortable. Also had a great upstairs which we didn’t need. It’s really on a island off an island - very quite as Lewis is but some great walks, beaches and sites close by. I suspect our visit will become an annual event.

Fantastic house and location
The house is in a fantastic location itself but also perfectly placed to explore both Lewis and Harris. Sally was incredibly helpful in making the arrangements and also if we needed anything during our stay. Having stayed in a lot of rental houses - they just don't come this well equipped. The attention to detail of the house was excellent, it was spotlessly clean and the welcome basket is such a nice touch. The house seems to come with its own Golden Eagle which flew over the house and having Bosta Beach so close was a real treat. I cant imagine staying anywhere else on the island. My only complaint was that we had to leave.

Great location, beautiful, well thought out cottage
We had a fantastic week at Loch View in late July. The house was clean, comfortable, well equipped and beautifully designed and decorated. It was only half a kilometre from Bosta Beach which is gorgeous. It was a great base for exploring Lewis and Harris. Superfast broadband, underfloor heating; everything you need to cook and serve the local lobster (bought off the boat from a local fisherman), soft comfortable sheets. Perfect whether you just want to kick back and relax and enjoy the views from house or if you want to go hiking, biking and sea kayaking! Our family of four were very comfortable with plenty of space and storage.

Perfect stay
After our stay being delayed a year by COVID-19 we were delighted to finally be able to stay at Loch View. The house is simply stunning, with every mod con you could possibly want. It is beautifully designed and furnished and offers plenty of space. Beds were lovely and comfy, wifi was better than at our home in London, and the views from the house were fab. Property is remote but that is what makes it special, just make sure you don't forget any shopping as it is a bit of a trek to the nearest store. A stunning beach is a short 10-15 min walk away and as others drive past the house you can see them all jealously looking at Loch View. Wildlife on the islands is amazing, within walking distance of the house we saw a kestrel, buzzard and a golden eagle. You will not be disappointed if you come to stay.

About the neighbourhood
Bernera is rich in local attractions. The house is less than a mile from Bosta beach - a large white beach with good, sheltered spots and fabulous views of outlying islands. At the rear of the beach is a replica Iron Age House, similar to those uncovered here by storms in 1993. Visit the restored Norse mill near Breaclete and carry on to the Bernera Lobster Pond. The best walk on the island is via Bosta, over the highest point on the island to Tobson, Valasay and Breaclete. Take refreshment en-route at the community centre café and visit the Bernera museum. In Kirkibost there is a well-stocked honesty shop. The loch opposite the house is stocked with brown trout and the house is close to the community slipway
Getting around
Bernera is on the west side of Lewis, surrounded by Loch Roag. It’s joined to Lewis by a road bridge which was built in 1953 and recently replaced. There is good access to Harris and to the tourist attractions on the west coast and around Uig. Stornoway is a 40-minute drive. Tarbert is about a 60 minute drive
