El Remanso beach offers the best "learn to surf" waves. You can get lessons and rent boards right there. The beach is beautiful, white sands, turquoise water and really, really hot sun all day long. A couple of ranchos right on the beach offer cold beers and simple but delicious food (quesadillas, fish tacos, mmm!). Sunsets are spectacular. A full moon setting down the bay is a sight to wonder. The night stars will have you looking at constellations you've heard about, but never found the time to discover. The sounds of frogs, wind and ocean waves will lull you into sleep. We love food, wine and entertaining. Our kitchen is set up with all the basic necessities to cook and enjoy company. Gas stove/oven, fridge, microwave, espresso and regular coffee maker, pots and pans and a charcoal grill will help you improvise wonderful cooking adventures. A well-tended patch of fresh herbs right on the terrace (mint, oregano, culantro, basil, thyme and anise) may give you some inspiration. Eventually, when you feel the urge to plug in...just drive to San Juan!

Beautiful house with great service from the house keeper. Nice view from the house to the beach and a small walk to bath in the sea.

Fantastic Weekend Getaway!
Upon arriving to the rental, the first thing you notice is the gorgeous view over looking the beach. It was breathtaking. We were then shown around the house. The living room and dining room areas have a picturesque view of the beach. We spent both nights watching the sunset from those rooms and pictures don't give it enough justice. The kitchen is adjacent to the living room and dining room and was fully equipped. We need not want for anything. We made a meal seafood soup and grilled fish and lobster from the fresh seafood sold in town. Right outside the living room is a lovely outdoor area with hammocks where we spent much of our time relaxing and talking. The rooms were spacious and very clean. That being said, I myself decided to sleep on the hammocks outside to fall asleep to the soothing ocean. There were 2 outdoor showers which I took full advantage of, especially after coming back from the beach. One of the evenings we decided to head in to town and it was a safe short drive, about 15 minutes. Overall, the house was wonderful and would fully recommend to others. 5 stars!!

Relaxed beauty on the beach off the beaten track
A great place to unwind if you prefer cooking for yourselves and having a beautiful Pacific Ocean beach virtually to yourselves. This is a simple but attractive and comfortable private home in a quiet area of other vacation homes, very different from the touristy hustle and bustle of San Juan del Sur. An appealing design of 3 wooden casitas staggered on a hillside, with bedrooms and baths in the upper two and a kitchen-living room area in the first, all reached by climbing up wooden stairs. Beautiful views of the Pacific from the house and a short walk down to a pristine bay beach almost completely undeveloped. A snack bar at the far end of the beach is the only place to buy food or drink. You will bring supplies for your stay from the small supermarket in San Juan del Sur. A perfect choice for a low-key romantic escape, a family with small children or a group of friends who enjoy relaxing together and don't like or need a touristy environment.

Surfers retreat
Great location if you like to surf and the kitchen house had great views of the ocean. No cell signal or wifi signal at all here so be prepared for that. Caretakers were very friendly and is close to town and jumping on the beach shuttle isn't difficult. Master bedroom is well appointed. Lots of critter visitors, dogs, lizards and bugs so if that's a problem may want to consider somewhere else. Dirt road to this may be difficult during their rainy season. We were at the end of the dry season so a 4wd wouldn't be necessary during that period. If you are looking to disconnect it's a good spot. The beach has a couple of small palapas which are laid back. My only complaint was the lack of a sharp knife or basics like trash bags which I picked up at the Pali market. One suggestion is to stop at the super Pali in Rivas to get groceries as the one closer is small and doesn't stock things like sun tan lotion. Vegetable and fruit selection is better to at Super Pali in Rivas. Overall we liked it. If I were a surfer I'd probably love it. House is located in a secure gated neighborhood and there is a fair amount of noise due to construction along with dog barking. Bird noises were definitely different. One additional comment, there is an outdoor shower at the back of the house which feels good in the hot part of the day. You don't need hot water given the heat. Cool shower was refreshing if you need to cut the heat.

Magical place to create memories with family and friends.
Casa Malinche is an exceptionally special place to stay. It's not just a vacation spot, although it is great for that too. The set up of the three cabanas allows for relaxing, cooking, playing and socializing with the most beautiful view you can imagine. The beach is a bit of a descent and is not easy for people with injuries or those greatly out of shape, but the clear water, abundance of life and tidal pools create endless opportunities for wonder and play. It is important to make sure that you have arranged for regular taxi pick up in order to get water and food, and ideally this is a place where it would be good to have your own wheels. There are no stores in this community and for the most part, it consists of vacation homes that may or may not be occupied. You have the area, pretty much to yourself, which can have its pluses and minuses. Jaime, the owner of Casa Malinche, was a pleasure to talk to, in making preparations for staying there, and getting information. Overall, I couldn't recommend Casa Malinche enough.

Just so great--will definitely be back
I stayed here in early 2014 with five others. It was an excellent four days. We hung out by the water, in the many hammocks, and when we felt like we needed a break from perfect isolation (albeit with a few other compounds around), we headed into San Juan del Sur for good eats, groceries, and an incredible boat tour to a largely uninhabited beach.

Gorgeous villa, beautiful beach, great time!
We just spent a wonderful week at Casa Malinche, so I wanted to rave about it a little bit. We really couldn't believe our luck to be staying somewhere so beautiful! We arrived at night, which meant very slow driving but was totally doable, and Luiz (the caretaker) had turned the lights on so we could spot the property. He gave us a quick helpful tour, and then left us to our devices - ie wandering around the 3 levels and lying in every hammock. The view of the ocean in the morning blew our minds, and we took many morning beach walks. You can climb around the rocky point to see thousands of crabs and schools of fish, and there are always a dozen or so pelicans diving for food in the bay. Remanzo was quiet even in the high season, and the swimming is amazing! Not too cold, a nice wave but no undertow or riptide. There are sting rays, but you just shuffle your feet to scare them off and we never had a problem. San Juan del Sur is 15 - 20 minutes away, and we had fun shopping at the local mercado, the fish market at the end of the harbour, and eating at a couple of the beach-side touristy restaurants. We ate mostly at Malinche though because we loved it there and the cooking facilities are great (charcoal grill). We had a sunset swim every evening, a few beers on the beach, and then maybe a bonfire and romp with some of the local dogs. I highly recommend this place for travellers who like their independence and want an easy place to feel at home.

Your dreams come true at Tropical paradise Casa Malinche El Rema
We had an unforgettable time at Casa Malinche, El Remanso Bay. This was a truly get-away experience, with no cell phone and internet, only the wild chocoyos (parakeets)and parrots waking us up in the morning and opening the bedrooms balcony doors to breath taking views of El Remanso (El Sucio) Bay below. We spotted whales surfacing one early morning from our balcony. Beginner surfers, mostly foreigners (European and North american), came to El Remaso since early morning to take advantage of the forgiving waves. We traveled with my two children and another family. We were able to rent surf boards at the beach for $10 per day! and instructors to both my kids - my children were able to stand up on their boards and ride the waves almost like pros. Pleasant crystalline, light turquoise waters above 80 degrees F. and mild waves coming ashore (so the name Remanso). San Juan del Sur is just 20 minutes away by car (no need for 4WD) to re-stock or to check on e-mails. We took a boat ride to neighboring Playa Blanca, a private beach only accessible by boat. The views of the Pacific shoreline are unbelievable! Saving the best for last, Casa Malinche is a rustic wood log-framed house with wood siding, founded on pylons. Very comfortable and spacious, open architectural layout. All bedroom windows are screened, so sleeping with windows open listening to the night sounds of waves crashing below and the night fauna is a truly wild experience. Up on the hill the breeze is very refreshing, so we did not have issues with insects. The house comes with all linens and towels, kitchen appliances etc. etc. You only need to bring yourself and your family. Also, be prepared for a good workout to climb stairs to the sleeping quarters and to get to the beach, although the beach is accessible by vehicle if desired. Live-in house keepers are friendly and helpful if you need directions. They are not intrusive with guests. Highly recommended for true adventurer and nature minded!

A gateway to paradise
It's a wonderful place to get in touch with nature. The best view to the ocean I can remember and the sunset/dawn it is just great. There is a very nice sunset/dawn that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your bed or balcony. Also, the house is all from wood and has very nice touch all over it, like "canastos" where they serve towels in the bathrooms and "hamacas" to relax, plants, etc. The services you get there in the house, are more than enough to easy your stay. To be honest, you have to be there to realize how wonderful the place is.

About the neighbourhood
El Remanso is a very private and a quiet perfect beach. Sometimes you will have the beach all to yourself. House owners live there seasonally. Tourists from San Juan arrive typically for surfing lessons by late morning. We love quick day trips to San Juan to get our fresh catch of the day (red snapper, lobster, shrimps...). You can get a wonderful variety of seafood at San Juan’s harbour. A trip to the market and a mad rush to Pali (grocery store) for general stuff and vegetables typically complete the foraging. There is always the bigger Maxi-Pali (a bigger supermarket) in Rivas. San Juan is a fun place day and night. Restaurants, bars, coffee places and Wifi everywhere can help you get your fix of crowds, noise, traffic and night life!

How to get there
San Juan del Sur (SJDS) is a bustling port town 2.5 - 3 hours from Managua Airport (depending on traffic and time of travel). San Juan del Sur is also about 1.5 - 2 hours from Liberia airport in Costa Rica. El Remanso is located 4.6 Km south from San Juan del Sur. It is a smooth ride on a dirt road, only 15 minutes away from San Juan! You can rent a 2-WD car at the airport and drive to el Remanso beach house. It also be great for any other day trips. However, if you want to explore near by surfer beaches (Maderas, Popoyo, Majagual, Gigante etc), we recommend to rent a 4-W car. You can also make arrangements with a local taxi for pick up to run errrands between Remanso and San Juan. Just ask us if you need more tips.
