There is an OS map centred on Heatherdene on the hall wall to help you plan your excursions in some of the country's most beautiful landscapes. Internally, Heatherdene has been lovingly restored to provide luxury holiday accommodation. The sitting room has large comfortable sofas, underfloor heating and a wood burning stove for warmth and relaxation. It is a delight to prepare meals in the well-planned, well-equipped kitchen with an electric Aga and large corner fridge for storing enough food and drink for the duration of your stay. Hypnos mattresses and 100% Egyptian cotton sheets ensure a good night's sleep and, should you bring any work away with you, there is WiFi and a desk with USB charger on the landing. Despite the feeling of getting off the beaten track, Heatherdene has a gastro pub at the bottom of the hill and plenty of lovely things to do and see within a 20-mile radius. Reeth is four miles away and the popular towns of Leyburn and Richmond are approximately a 30 minute drive from Heatherdene and well worth a visit. This holiday at a glance Sleeps six guests. Attractions and nearby amenities The Yorkshire Dales is a walker's paradise, with everything from gentle stream-side rambles to energetic hikes across wild moorland. You can find a range of walks online, including accessible walks for those with limited mobility. If you prefer to see the countryside on two wheels, there are a number of cycle hire facilities in the area. You might also be lucky enough to catch the Tour de Yorkshire during your stay. The event has been running since 2015 and normally takes place around the May Day Bank Holiday. Sitting on the northern bank of the River Ure, Leyburn is a market town at the heart of Wensleydale. Here you'll find some quirky shops, the wonderful grocer Campbells, traditional inns and a weekly market, as well as spectacular views of the Dales. Near Leyburn is Bolton Castle, one of the country's best-preserved medieval castles. The gardens were replanted following archaeological work in the 1990s, and the planting reflects the medieval period of the castle. Middleham has a few claims to fame. Thanks to previous royal connections, it became known as “The Windsor of the North.” The town also boasts a magnificent ruined castle, which has the largest keep in the North of England. In the morning you can watch the horses walking through the cobbled market square on their way to the gallops above the town. The town of Reeth is in a spectacular setting, with hills all around creating the feeling of a natural amphitheatre. The town used to be one of the nation's main suppliers of lead but now the emphasis is more on arts and crafts as well as outdoor pursuits. If you're visiting Reeth, make sure to pop into the Swaledale Museum, where you can discover local history ranging from rocks dating back 270 million years to toys from the 1950s.
