Cottage
A highly unique character cottage being part of a former late medieval hall dating back to the 15th Century. Large, farmhouse-style kitchen packed with character features and a Rangemaster stove. Two very comfortable bedrooms; the main bedroom being much bigger with a medieval jetty and vaulted ceiling which indicates that it would have been the 'solar' for the old hall. The front parlour has original Tudor features and a large fireplace with log burning stove. Spacious, modern bathroom with bath and powerful thermostatic shower. Highly efficient central heating system means that the property is very warm and cosy in the winter. The front parlour has original Tudor features and a large fireplace with log burning stove. Spacious, modern bathroom with bath and powerful thermostatic shower. Highly efficient central heating system means that the property is very warm and cosy in the winter. Despite the 'quirky' features like uneven stairs and floors, and the low doorways, The Medlar should be perfectly acceptable for the active elderly and older children. The front door opens onto the pavement and it is only a very short stroll to the town centre where you can buy fresh, local produce from great little shops such as Jane's bakery and the traditional butcher's with their excellent home produced sausages. Kington is truly a town that time has forgotten! It remains largely unchanged from the 1950's with very friendly people and a much slower pace of life; there are none of the usual 'High Street' shops. In their place are several antique shops, galleries, bookshops, a well-stocked local supermarket and a public library with free internet access. There is an award-winning real-ale pub within staggering distance and a luxurious spa with indoor pool and gym just up the road. It is also only a very quick drive/cycle to Kington Golf Course; the highest golf course in England. Walk out of the back door through the private, enclosed courtyard garden and follow your way through the ancient walled burgage paths past the church and up the hill to Offa's Dyke and Hergest Ridge.More

We stayed for 3 nights in early September. The age of the building means you have to accept that the stairs are a little sloping, and some of the door frames are low, but there is so much character and the Medlar feels very homely....More

Very impressed with the Medlar. Well equipped and comfortable with fantastic original features. Ideal for walks from the door and very convenient for local shops and bus services. We had a lovely week and would like to return but sadly cannot justify a 50% increase...More

Historical accommodation right in the centre of Kington. Rooms are large and the smallest room was probably the double room at the back of the house. Fairly modern bathroom which was good. The Medlar does have some quirks due to its age and Kay's instructions...More

This cottage feels very homely and relaxing, but also historical with very interesting features and characteristics. It is generally well-equipped and also a convenient location being a few minutes walk from the centre of the town. It is on a fairly busy road, although that...More

The Medlar is a delightful old cottage with plenty of character. It is centrally located in Kington and there are many interesting walks from here in amazing countryside with outstanding views.

Everything in the house works and the patio is a good space for sitting out to enjoy a drink. The cottage is set in the middle of Kington which has a maze of footpaths in and around the town waiting to be explored. Best place...More

About the neighbourhood
Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the small, market town of Kington is situated near the Welsh Borders in the area known as The Marches. This charming settlement offers a number of good shops, pubs, restaurants and a variety of tourist attractions close by including the impressive Eastnor Castle, Hergest Croft Gardens and the Offa's Dyke Path. Nestled right beneath the spectacular Hergest Ridge (apparently the inspiration for the beautiful music of both Elgar and Mike Oldfield) and just a short journey away from the Mortimer Trail, its location makes it the perfect base both for experienced walkers or those who just want to walk off a great lunch! (There is a Michelin star restaurant 3 miles away) Kington is just 12 miles from the town of Hay-on-Wye, world-famous for its...
