About the neighbourhood
The local area is steeped in the industrial history. There is the privately run heritage Ecclesbourne Valley Railway that runs through Wirksworth, there is also the National Tram Museum at Crich (5 miles away) and the Derwent Valley Mills (listed as a World Heritage site). For outdoor pursuits the High Peak Trail starts just down the road, and Carsington Water reservoir has lots of activities for sailing, horse riding and other water sports. Wirksworth has an Arts Festival in September with quirky little shops, pubs, and a 52 seat cinema with 3 vintage sofas on the back row. It is away from the crowds of Matlock but is close enough to the main Peak District attractions, such as Bakewell, Chatsworth and the Peak Park itself. Alton Towers is only 40 minutes away and if you would like a spot of shopping the City of Derby is only 30 minutes drive away. For romantics, Wirksworth is thought to be the setting of George Eliot's first novel “Adam Bede”
