The Old Bothy is an eco-friendly luxury barn conversion, peacefully situated on a 'Farming for Wildlife' award winning working dairy farm, close to the North Lakeland Fells, near Wigton in the Northern Lake District in Cumbria.The Old Bothy is ideally situated to visit the Lake District, the Solway Coast, Carlisle, Hadrian`s Wall and the Scottish Borders.
This superb semi-detached cottage near Wigton offers two bedrooms and a spacious sitting area with a feature sandstone fireplace which divides the kitchen and dining area. With the owner's added touches throughout, this Lake District cottage has been lovingly restored with many original features maintained from the days when it was used as a farm bothy. Characterful and very cosy.
This was our second stay at Red Hall Farm and we absolutely loved The Old Bothy so just had to stay in this wonderful cottage again. Not only is it clean and extremely cosy, but there is also a dedicated outdoor space for the family with a football net, slides and swing ball, plus picnic benches to enjoy our food overlooking the fields.
As this is a working farm, our boys also got to feed the calves and were lucky enough to feed the lambs also. The hosts just couldn't do enough for us and the home made bread, banana cake and jams were truly scrumptious.
We really couldn't recommend this place enough and we will definitely be staying again.

The Bothy with a view
On arrival we received a very warm Cumbrian welcome from the hostess.
The Bothy was absolutely lovely.
It looks better than some of the photographs show. It felt very comfortable and so much nicer than staying in a hotel. It felt very much home from home.
The views were beautiful and it felt nice to be in close proximity to a lovely farm.
The cottage felt nice and warm without needing any heating.
Absolutely every kitchen utensil you can think of has been provided for you so no problem with self catering. Short drive to a supermarket too.
We absolutely loved staying here and so hope that we can come and stay again one day!

Relaxing break
Lovely comfortable spotless cottage. Had a nice time exploring the surrounding area and returning to a cosy cottage each day. Great hosts and hope to return for another break.

Never mind the weather
No host can guarantee the weather but you can be guaranteed that the welcome, accommodation and facilities are first class. We had a very wet short break on our third visit but still found plenty to do . We have stayed in both cottages and they are both fantastic with every consideration for anything you might need for your stay . Thanks again

Amazing Family Friendly Holiday Cottage
Wow! What a wonderful cottage in a gorgeous setting. Very clean and well appointed with a very warm and cosy feel. Some lovely touches including toys and dedicated outdoor space for the children. We couldn't have been more relaxed and happier.
Joanne and Martin were wonderful and very accommodating hosts. Nothing was too much trouble and the home baking was truly scrumptious!
We didn't want to go home!

Very Accommodating
We had an excellent time at The Old Bothy. Everything was clean and a warm reception awaited us. Joanne was very accommodating as to the day and time of our arrival. Thank you once again. Keep up the good work, and we hope to see you sometime.

Amazing home away from home
We have been visiting for 6 years and keep coming back (likely forever more).
Joanne and Martin are so friendly and welcoming.
The welcome banana bread I amazing, and Joanne always makes sure age appropriate toys are available. The kitchen is the best stocked holiday kitchen I have ever experienced.
We love staying on a working farm and feeding the cows.
Great grass play area which is fenced off for the children to enjoy. We love barbecue (which can be hired) during the Sommer and wood burning stove evenings in autumn.
Great place to explore the lakes from.

Wonderful weekend in Wigton
A very comfortable and well appointed holiday cottage with every need catered for. Eco friendly and yet cosy, this delightful ‘ bothy ‘ is well placed for exploring the beauty of Cumbria and surrounding areas.
We were made to feel most welcome by our hosts who made sure everything was satisfactory and acceptable.

A fantastic place to stay
We were first introduced to Joanne and Martin and their fantastic cottages back in 2013. We have returned to these cottages on a further 10 occasions, we regard them as our second home(s).
The cottages are very well appointed, extremely clean and eco-friendly.
You can be assured of a very friendly welcome, a tasty welcome pack and an enjoyable stay.
A look through the Visitor Book will show how popular these cottages are by the number of guests who, like us, have returned on numerous occasions.
