Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Family Perfect
This Villa is 'classic Sayulita.' If you're looking for an awesome experience of old Sayulita dressed up in the comforts of 'new Sayulita' this is the Villa for you.
The only problem that we had were the directions on Trip Advisor. The directions on the "map" provided were wrong. There was no contact phone number. Fortunately I have some experience in Sayulita & knew who to ask but even the taxi drivers ( the most reliable connection for directions in Sayulita) had never heard of it. The streets in Sayulita are not named or if they are, the names of the streets change on a whim, making finding this wonderful place a real challenge.

I didn't mean Lauren personally, but my communication with her was lovely and there were no problems with her stay.

Needs upkeep, many amenities missing
Just stayed My family of four (two adults, two kids age 7 and 10) recently stayed at Villa Casa Shira. Here is my honest review.
First, our background: This is our 4th trip to Sayulita. We’ve stayed at multiple properties that cost between $700/week to $2200/week.
First, the good:
- Pool: Casa Shira has the best of any of the properties we’ve stayed at before. It’s very large, well-maintained, and a pool guy came twice during our stay. Excellent for the kids. It’s not heated, but that’s a good thing in the summer.
- Location: The house is close to town and beach, but far enough away from the noise. The Trip Advisor map is incorrect, though. House is located at the very end of Manuel Rodrigo Sanchez (next to Casa Surf & Skate), where it elbows onto a private road. The lead-up to the house is a slightly steep hill, and then the driveway is also a little steep. Someone with mobility issues might want to golf cart rather than walk.
- Wi-Fi: The strongest of any place we’ve stayed in Sayulita. We brought five devices, so this was a big deal for us.
- Terrace: It’s massive and wraps around two sides of the house. Plenty of room to work out, do yoga, or walk around.
- Security: Everything in the house has a lock and key, and the house itself is set far up from the street where there’s a heavy gate, so there’s a good sense of security.
- Property owner: Ionie was very responsive when I had questions, even if the answers weren’t always satisfactory.
Now the not-so-good:
- 1 bd vs 2 bd: This house is billed as a 2-bdrm, but it is actually a 1-bdrm. There is an additional 1-bdrm casita on the property outside the wall to the house. This is significant because we traveled with kids and the casita is too far to put your kids there. This is not clear in the property description—I only noticed it in a photo caption after I booked it, a couple of weeks before our arrival. Ionie was kind enough to arrange for beds to be placed in the living room, but essentially we paid for a 1-bdrm house thinking we were getting a 2-bdrm. The air conditioning is only in the bedroom, so our kids were hot going to bed each night and more vulnerable to bugs.
- There are quite a few amenities on the property listing that simply are NOT there: washer, dryer, dishwasher, satellite TV, DVD player, and grill. We stopped at the Mega store on the way to town and bought a bunch of meat thinking we’d be able to grill it, but nope. There was no hammock or table on the terrace (as in the pictures). I began to find out about these a couple of days before our arrival. Ionie blamed it on Trip Advisor, but she had every opportunity to let me know when she confirmed our booking. Very disappointed to see that these are STILL listed as amenities and the listing hasn’t been corrected. False advertising.
- Housekeeping: Listing says that it’s included, but Balbina, the woman who let us in, told us it wasn’t and that it was an extra cost (my husband is virtually fluent in Spanish, so this was not a misunderstanding due to language). She delivered fresh towels and took away the garbage three times, but never did any type of cleaning. We had the same sheets for a week during our very humid stay. Also, mentioned above, the pool guy came twice during our stay. It needed to be cleaned every day, so we did that ourselves.
- Condition of the house: Casa Shira looks like a formerly really nice property that simply hasn’t been maintained. Paint is peeling from the railing on the massive terrace and a lot of the utensils in the kitchen need to be replaced. The photos on the Trip Advisor listing look a bit old, as the house now has bars on all the windows and doors leading to the terrace, making the house very secure, but also very dark. Many light bulbs needed replacing. The kids’ beds were comfortable, but not the one in the bedroom.
- Keys: All the locks in the house means carrying around a lot of keys. It took us 10 minutes to figure out all the locks/keys the first time we tried to leave the house. It seems very excessive and could be streamlined.
Casa Shira is very affordable compared to many other properties in Sayulita. Ionie seems to believe that the low cost of the property excuses the fact that it didn’t deliver on its promises. I disagree. Listing amenities that aren’t provided is either deceptive or negligent. We didn’t find out soon enough to book another property.
IMPORTANT NOTE about Payment Protection when booking through Trip Advisor: This needs massive improvement also. I wanted to cancel our booking before we arrived, but Trip Advisor’s policy is that you have to arrive at the property and then take pictures of everything you DIDN’T get, then send to Trip Advisor to file a claim, all on the day of your arrival. We didn’t get to the property until 7 pm.
Additionally, Trip Advisor’s customer service number is a toll-free number you can only call from inside the US. Very odd considering many TA users are international. I had to use a friend’s Skype phone account to call them. By the time I sent in all of our photos—of amenities that were NOT there?—and got a response from TA, my family had already unpacked and we had to go to an appointment, so we couldn’t move to another property.
Overall, we made the best of our stay—and the great pool often took the edge off—but in the end, we didn’t get what we thought we were paying for, which was really disappointing.

About the neighbourhood
Please be advised that there is a history of poor water quality at the main beach in Sayulita. Many people swim and do not get sick, though others blame the ocean water. Swim at your own risk. There are other Beatrice you can go to fairly nearby that are significantly cleaner.
Theft is fairly common all over Sayulita, but we have taken every measure to secure the property and house, including Iron gating, padlocks, and a safe. We are not responsible for lost or stolen property.
