History
Balinroey is located on the edge of the Clogher Valley which is steeped in ancient Irish history. The scenic Clogher Valley was home and inspiration to the acclaimed 19th century poet and novelist William Carleton. He has lent his name to the Carleton Country Trail which maps out walking and cycling routes through many of the landmarks associated with Carleton and gives you the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful and historic countryside. Clogher is one of the most ancient places in Ireland and was once the capital city of the Principality of Oriel. Its cathedral holds the ‘Cloghor’, one of the ‘Three stones of Erin’ and dates from the mid-18th century. Its next-door neighbor, Augher, is home to Spur Royal Castle, a typical plantation castle with an interesting history. A short 10-min drive will take you to the breath-taking views from Errigal Keerogue.More
