It is perched on a spur on the upper reaches of Penang Hill, at an elevation of 650m. Its position gives it unparalleled views north, east, and south Hickory stands secluded on half-acre of manicured lawns and wooded slopes, facing east and overlooking Georgetown and the mainland beyond. A wall of trees and tall bamboo ensure privacy from other inhabitants and regular visitors to Penang Hill. Sunrise is spectacular and Nightfall over the city and mainland a sight to behold. The tranquility of Hickory is accompanied by the sounds of rushing water and of the birds and monkeys in the distance. It is a place to stay to get away from the pace and pressures of city life; to read, rewind and to restore your being. Welcome to Hickory! More

About the neighbourhood
There’s a quiet charm about this hill station. A certain romanticism persists as one evokes the era of the early 20th century when the vistas below were nothing but an endless green swath of rainforest trees, which until the 1930s blanketed most of the island and the mainland. The only way up and down the hill in the 1890s was by pony or sedan. Visitors to Penang Hill would trek to the Botanical Gardens at the foothill, take in the sights at the waterfall before embarking on the uphill trek. From the Botanical Gardens Waterfall, a narrow road led up the hilltop. It is said that Captain Francis Light was the first to plot a horse track up Penang Hill, way back in 1788. Later there was a pony and sedan service to carry people and supplies.
Getting around
The best way to explore the surroundings is on foot. There are a number of bridle paths which traverse the woods and skirt the bungalows. The train stops are linked to these bye-paths and so it is possible to “hop on & hop off”.
