Iris Meadow Cottage

Holiday Rental House -
1 Bedroom , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 5
Gardonne, Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine
An old farmworker's cottage recently refurbished in a rustic style but with modern amenities. It is located in its own garden with an ample area in front for outdoor dining. The kitchen retains original features, including a stone sink but also includes a gas cooker and refrigerator. The handmade oak table easily seats eight. The second room downstairs can function as a extra bedroom as it has a sofa bed which opens to make a comfortable double bed. The bathroom is off this room and there is also a small utilities room also. Upstairs there is a spacious room with a kingsize bed and a single bed is also available here if required. The property is part of a larger group of farm buildings which now sits among huge fruit trees and well-loved flower gardens. At the bottom of the garden is the Gardonnette stream, shrouded in mature popl... Read more

We had a very enjoyable week here. The cottage has lots of traditional features with some modern additions such as the bathroom and the roof space converted into a bedroom. Our hosts were helpful and friendly and shared homemade drinks and garden produce with us...More

About the neighbourhood
Situated in the midst of rolling green farmland and vineyards with scatterings of woodland crowning hills and draping valleys. Ample opportunities for bike-riding or rambling, as well the chance to sample local wines at the various vineyards nearby. There is an 800 year old chateau about 5 kms from the house as well as numerous other sites of interest an easy car ride away. Local villages hold regular market days and in the summer there are weekly 'marche gourmands' in the evening where everyone gathers at trestle tables to eat local delicacies. Some very good restaurants can be found in local villages also.
Getting around
It is possible to travel around using bikes which we have available for no extra charge and then use the local train service which runs about every 45 minutes on an irregular service during the day. It is of course much more convenient however if you are able to have the use of a vehicle as that allows you to visit some of the world heritage sites which are about an hour or an hour and half from the house.
Car advised
How to get there
Airport: Bergerac: 15.0 km
Railway: Gardonne: 3.5 km
The house is 15 minutes from Bergerac airport and only a little more than 3 kilometers from Gardonne railway station. The house is 3.5 kms up the D15 road from Gardonne following the direction for Sigoules. (While in Gardonne the road is labelled rue de Monteton but later becomes known as route de Sigoules). The railway crossing is about half the way to our house which is on the left hand side.

After the small hamlet of Les Mouthes comes our hamlet, Le Maine.

Several old stone buildings sit on either side of the road. Our small lane is just after this. Our house sits at the end of the lane under an enormous Lebanese Cedar. Please come through the gate and park the car inside our yard. There is plenty of room.
