L'Isle-en-Dodon, Haute-Garonne, Occitanie
In early 1814, en route to the Battle of Toulouse, Wellington's army marched along the Save Valley following what is now the D17. At that time they would have passed the recently built Moulin de Samaran. After a century and a bit of grinding wheat into flour. the Moulin was substantially re-built during the 1990s when it was converted into gites.

Knoops Cottage is situated at the rear of the main mill building and has its own private entrance, terrace and small woodland garden. The front door opens into the main reception room and galley kitchen. An open-plan staircase leads to a galleried landing, off which are one double bedroom and one twin-bedded room, together with a family bathroom with separate shower cabinet.

Whether sitting on the terrace dining “al fresco” on the wonderful warm evenings or sitting around the log fire o...

About the neighbourhood
Situated on the banks of the River Save, 4.5 kms south of L'Isle-en-Dodon, the Moulin de Samaran is ideally situated to explore all the facets of Gascony. L'Isle-en-Dodon is a sleepy country town which has yet to succumb to all the rigours of modern life. It has a number of cafes, restaurants and bars and a bank, together with a convenience store and a supermarket on the edge of town which is open six and a half days a week. The Pyrenees are a forty minute drive away and for those of a more adventurous bent, a day trip to the Pic du Midi is a must. For those who enjoy rooting around at markets, it is possible to visit one every day of the week. The largest being at Samatan on a Monday morning which comprises both a livestock and foie gras market, together with traditional market stalls. it a number of ancient sites, both in the valleys and on the mountain tops. Each summer 'Les 31 Notes d'Ete' are held, during which concerts and recitals are offered throughout the area. Many are free or for a nominal charge. Should you tire of the Gascon fare, Spain and tapas is about an hour's drive away. For those who enjoy an adrenalin rush, then a day trip to Andorra would be an ideal fix.
How to get there
For those who wish to fly, Toulouse (Blagnac) Airport is served by a number of airlines departing from many points in the UK and Europe. Several international car rental companies are represented at the airport and exiting the airport onto the Periferique is simple and well-signposted. Should you prefer to bring your own car, then the drive from a north coast port will take between 8 - 11 hours (excluding stops). Sailing to Bilbao or Santander means starting and finishing the holiday with a mini-cruise and reduces the driving to about four and a half hours. Do not be concerned by the journey times as French roads are considerably less congested than would normally be found within the UK. Suggestions for hotels for overnight stops available on request. For those of you who prefer a train, then it is Eurostar to Paris and TGV from Paris to Toulouse via Bordeaux. There are car rental desks at Toulouse (Matabiau) Station.
