Carmen moved from Germany to Scotland in 2007. She is a keen traveller and enthusiastic tour guide with a particular love for all things Scottish: the land, the people, the language, the literature and the music. Carmen’s partner John has a lifelong love of wildlife, especially for birds and wild flowers. If he is not out and about birdwatching, he is looking after our wildlife friendly garden. We live on site, in the main house right behind you. If you should have any questions or problems during your stay, we will be happy to help. The Smiddy is the best place we have stayed at. Cosy, spotlessly clean, and everything you would need and more. Could not find one thing wrong. Has great views across Dunvegan Bay. Would not hesitate in recommending this property.

This is a beautiful place for a peaceful holiday. We stayed for five days in August and I have never been in a better holiday cottage. It is breathtakingly nice. The views over the outer Hebrides are great but the Smiddy is still a lovely...More

The Smiddy is an absolute gem. It offers breathtaking views, the most perfectly equipped and beautiful accommodation one can imagine and such lovely hosts. Simply cannot praise this cottage highly enough. Hope to return to this little piece of heaven in the future.

About the neighbourhood
'The Smiddy' is situated on the Waternish peninsula, one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas on the Isle of Skye.
Waternish is a working crofting community with a long history of occupation dating back to Neolithic times. Explore the remains of three Iron Age Brochs or the beautiful Trumpan Churchyard, the scene of the Battle of the Spoiled Dyke in 1578.
Crofting past and present, is evident everywhere in old markings and lazy beds and the remains of old stone cottages.
Waternish is also an area of outstanding scenic beauty with stunning views across Loch Dunvegan to Dunvegan Head and MacLeod's Tables and across the Minch to the Outer Hebrides. Waternish sunsets are legendary. Waternish also features three Dark Skye Discovery Sites
Getting around
Skye offers a network of public transport buses. There is a bus from Portree to Dunvegan that stops near Fairy Bridge at the Waternish junction. Unfortunately there is no public transport onto the peninsula and to 'The Smiddy'. We strongly recommend that you travel by car to make the most of your holiday on Skye. Many of the most beautiful spots and popular visitor attractions are not, or not easily, reached by public transport.
The nearest train station is in Kyle of Lochalsh.
The nearest airport is in Inverness.

How to get there
How to find us – From Skye Bridge to The Smiddy

After crossing the Skye Bridge, follow the A87 to Portree / Broadford.
There is a Co Op supermarket with petrol station and cash machine in Broadford (open every day, 24 hours)
From Broadford follow the A87 to Portree.

When you get to Sligachan, you can chose between two options:
You can follow the A87 to Portree or turn left, following the A863 to Dunvegan.
The A87 to Portree is the main road, which allows faster travelling and gives you the opportunity to do some shopping or fill up with petrol in Portree.
The A863 to Dunvegan is the scenic route, with beautiful views of the Cuillin Hills and the coast, but it is a smaller and in parts winding road, which means slower travelling.
