The Sweet Spot Stay is in luscious the Kehena/Kalapana area and what Hawaii looked like 50 years ago. We cater to the adventure traveler not the tourist. This what we call Deep Hawaii and living like a local. The only clock is the morning neighborhood walkers who go by the house at 7:25 am and welcome anybody to join them as they conclude down by the point. Just five minutes away is a spectacular park that juts out into the ocean providing marvelous 180 views and magnificent rock formation and sea windows. And just a ten minute walk is the world famous Kehena black sand clothing optional beach. And just a ten minute walk is the world famous Kehena black sand clothing optional beach. (the only clothing optional beach on all Hawaii Island) Our Coastal Cottage gives you that indoor/outdoor living with an airy breezy feel and tropical grass mat ceilings. Large lanai and screened in kitchen/dining provides our guests what it means to live it like a local. Lush, exotic landscape, tree top hammock are in a most unique setting. I came to this part of the island back in the 80's and I have not found anything comparable to the Sweet Spot in regards to the unusual and remarkable topography. Lava rock walls plunge into a grotto formed the collapse of an ancient lava tube which created an environment where giant mango and monkey pod trees tapped into an underground stream. Our street Kipuka literally means 'The hole' and at the end is Puna Kai Street which mean 'Spring and Ocean' as this fresh water runs into Kehena Bay. Mature coconut trees, tropical fruit trees and being able to eat what is growing or in season. Sample sugar cane, soursop, banana, breadfruit, cacao, grapefruit, Tahitian lime, avocado, macadamia nut, mango, cherry (season dependent) and there is always a year round supply of edible greens growing that are similar to spinach or collards. The place got its name from the people who visited and most everybody said, 'This is a Sweet Spot' and so it became. The dramatic changes in elevation makes one part under the sky and the other in a magical hidden grotto under 30 foot tree canopy. For the tree lovers we got you covered as an ancient Monkey Pod has a trunk so large three people can not reach around it. The birds in the morning and the frogs as night create and soundscape that will transport you. Big sliding doors open to a large lanai making a flow through breeze that will caress you all day and night. A swing porch chair is a idyllic spot that looks out over large lawns and never at somebody else's house or car. The ocean view, from the street and a peek-a-boo view from the front porch, is almost always roaring in the distance. The coastal road is one of the most charming and exotic on the entire island, snaking through over hanging trees that create tunnels of green while the ocean is right there and plenty of places to stop along the way and soak it up. A local event, (four miles away) 'Uncle Roberts' Night Market on Wednesday is a must see event starting at 4pm and going until the party stops. Open air, no cover, live music with dozens of food vendors offering cuisine from around the world from crepes, to pizza, to Thai to Samoan and you don't want to miss Nicoco's Vegan Gelato. They always sell out. It is not unusual for drop in Hula Dancers to be accompanied by the band who play and sing traditional Hawaiian songs as well as honky tonk, reggae and country songs for the crowd to dance to. Sunday is the big drumming circle at Kehena Beach with the party that continues on the Seaview lawn. Music, merriment, dancing, flow-arts, slack rope walking, juggling, and you never know what you will see. Our on site manager Taylor is Hawaii born and raised and can make sure you get what you need and what you are looking for, like a local can. Whether it is fishing, surf lessons, hunting, cooking with local food, lei making classes, hula lessons, or an in depth tour of the property. His partner Jaqi will see to all the internet communications and housekeeping tasks. We love to host and let us show you how big our Aloha can be. About the neighbourhood
Want to see what Hawaii was like 50 years ago? Then this is it. Out of the way and off the beaten path our side of the island is slow, slow but you can go, go with many places to see and visit for day trips. This neighborhood sports some of the finest coastal drives on the island with trees overhanging a windy narrow road creating tunnels of green with shards of sunlight breaking through the leaves. Stop at many places and soak up the waves as the crash against rocky shores and spray you with a salty mist. So many places that are photo worthy. There is a 'scene' that happens on Wednesday at 'Uncle Robert's' that is unlike anything else in the state. A night market that is open air, no cover, live music from the house band, dancing and food
Getting around
The best way to see the island and our neighborhood is to rent a car. There is a bus that goes by three times a day but for most people their time is precious and don't want to wait for the public transportation.
