About the neighbourhood
SPLIT (30 min from Villa Kate) The first inhabitant of Split was the Roman emperor Diocletian who started to build his palace in this friendly bay around 293 AD. After his abdication he withdrew to this luxurious palace of about 30 thousand square meters. The following turbulent centuries made the palace into a town first populated by the citizens of the nearby Salona, fleeing before Avars and Slavs. The town overgrew the walls of the palace and its authorities kept changing - from Croatian kings in 10th century AD, Hungarian and Venetian administration, to French rulers and Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Such past left its traces combined in the town everyday life. The city, however, went on remaining the centre of this part of the coast till our day. This mixture of historic layers brought some clumsiness and some things done too fast but today all that makes a part of its originality. The big city today lives by the silent beats of history, lively spirit of the young and its particular Mediterranean charm. ŠIBENIK (30 min from Villa Kate) Šibenik is allocated almost in the middle part of the croatian coast of the Adriatic sea, in the picturesque, indented bay in which influents Krka, one of the most beautiful karstic rivers of Croatia. For the Šibenik area characteristic is the Mediterranean climate with hot summers which are mildened by the mistral, and by dry winters. Šibenik, the oldest self-native Croatian city on the Adriatic, is situated in the most protected natural port, in the middle of the east coast of the Adriatic sea. Today Šibenik is the capital city, cultural-educational, administrative and economical center of the County of Šibensko-kninska. City of Šibenik has a very important traffic location, good relations make direct communications. The new built high way “Dalmatina” has attached Šibenik with the rest of Croatia and Europe, with even more quality. National park KRKA (45 min from Villa Kate) National park Krka is a wide, mostly non modified area of exquisite and multiple natural values, and it includes one or more conserved or slightly changed ecological systems. National park Krka was proclaimed in 1985. and it is the seventh National park of Croatia. It is entirely situated on the area of Šibenik-Knin county, and it includes size of 109 km2 by the flow of river Krka: 2 km downstream of Knin to Skradin and the down flow of the river ?ikola. With the drowned part of the estuary it is long about 72,5km and by the length it is the second river in Croatia. The river Krka rises in the footage of mountain Dinara, 3,5km north-east of Knin under 22 metres high Topoljski waterfall, The big waterfall in the winter noisy and in the summer without water. With its seven tuff barriers and its total fall of 242m Krka is a natural and a karstic phenomena.
