Amazing experience
We have just experienced 5 nights on Skylax cruising the Dodacanese and it was an incredible experience. We are familiar with monohull sailing and were impressed with the space, comfort and speed of Skylax. We felt comfortable and safe at all times in the capable hands of Rachael and Oli who are also exceptional hosts. Rachael's meals were delicious, healthy and varied.
Whilst we enjoyed the challenge of getting involved in sailing no experience was necessary as Oli and Rachael take care of everything. We could just as easily have relaxed in the comfortable and spacious cockpit of the ample deck space, including the trampolines to watch the world go by. We had a mixture of nights in tranquil bays and town quays which added to the interest and were consulted all the time about what we would like to do. Fabulous to jump into the sea for a cool off from the back of the boat with a lovely fresh water shower there afterwards. Of course we also had our own en suite bathroom too. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well whilst on board with the gentle movement of the boat to lull us off. The entire boat was spotlessly clean.
We highly recommend a trip on Skylax and we are already planning our next one. Thanks Rachael and Oli for such a memorable experience and all the chats and laughs.

Smooth Sailing with Wonderful Hosts
As soon as you board Skylax, you notice the smells: crisp sea air, mint and basil plants cultivated topside, fresh bread, local cheeses. The truth is, Skylax is more than a wonderful vessel, she’s an excellent taverna. Every morning, our skipper, Linda, presented fresh fruits, yogurt, breads and spreads, juices, teas and espresso. After a day’s sail she would prepare a light, yet bolstering lunch perfect for a warm afternoon: a traditional Greek salad with barley rusks and feta, grilled manouri cheese, a soy and sweet chili chicken dish. Her husband and first mate, Ed, would mix G&Ts and occasionally tell us colorful tales from his time as a “traveler in British tubular steel.” (He spent two decades aboard nuclear submarines.)
Sailing from Kalymnos to Leros, Lipsi and Patmos, Skylax transported us through time as much as space. Even if I hadn’t brought my dog-eared copy of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, it would be easy to imagine Odysseus sailing these waters millennia ago. The waters are dotted with sails, not steamers; the mountain tops with whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches.
And yet, each day we’d happily disrupt that fantasy by steering our launch towards shores where ouzeries and tavernas awaited, always ready for us with a table, a tour of the kitchen to see the specials, and a charming family or host eager to shake hands and say hello. This was all thanks to the Spurrs, of course, who took a devoted interest in our excursions. We’ve chartered with commercial and private operations, and the skipper is always part tour guide; Ed and Linda go far beyond that, which was really special. It was like a vacation with new friends.
This was our first cat charter. Skylax is a 47’ Privilege, well equipped for comfortable cruising. We found the wide open spaces of the cockpit, galley and common area a welcome change from the tight shuffling around on even large monohulls. The stability that came with two hulls meant my wife slept easier at night and I could move about shooting photos more easily. Best about cats though is simply the webbing: I slept up top in the nets almost every night, gazing at the Milky Way and wondering how far away the ancient astrologer was who named the stars above.
We’ve had the fortune to sail in Polynesia, the BVIs, Florida and Croatia. Sailing the Dodecanese with a charming English couple takes the cake, though.
