Pavilion Cottage was converted by the current owners from its original use as a fruit drying store serving the Earl of Galloway and his guests. Apples, pears, figs, peaches and grapes were among the fruits produced in the surrounding walled garden and hothouses. Thanks to the mild climate of the gulf stream most of these are still grown here but not in such quantities. After the Earl’s estate was divided the privately situated building with adjacent open air swimming pool became a perfect party venue as it housed a wine cellar and the lawns were used for tennis and croquet hence the name Pavilion. With it’s close proximity to the lovely tree-lined sandy beach at Rigg Bay, Pavilion Cottage is now a perfectly cosy seaside retreat. An enclosed private lawn provides plenty of space to play croquet/badminton or just sit and read or listen to music. But turn off your technology to soak up the true atmosphere. Imagine sitting with a glass in hand or taking a gentle swim in the heated outdoor pool while the birds sing from somewhere nearby with the delicious scent of the garden in the air. Pavilion Cottage is the ideal place to unwind. Two ground floor bedrooms including one with zip and link beds to allow twin or king size configuration, and ground floor shower room make this accessible for less agile visitors. A loft single bedroom is available on request. A secluded sandy beach is about 3 minutes walk and the village pub and garage/convenience store only a mile and accessible via a pretty coastal path. Well behaved dogs are welcome and the walks are fantastic. An open plan dining/living area opens out onto a terrace with table and chairs for al-fresco dining for 8. In cooler months or after sundown light the wood burning stove and soak up the atmosphere with a glass of pressed apple or elderflower from the gardens or a local whisky or gin from our two closest distilleries. Free range eggs from our chickens and Indian runner ducks, collected from the nearby walled gardens are offered to our guests when available and cooking in a range style oven will bring out the baker in you. Home grown vegetables and occasionally rare breed meat may also be available from the owner. Or why not catch your own fish for supper. If that sounds too much like hard work, seafood or locally sourced organically reared meat can be delivered to your door once a week. Tucked within the walled garden on the Galloway House estate, formerly home to the earls of Galloway, this cottage has year round appeal. The Galloway House Gardens spring into colour from as early as January with swathes of snowdrops (apparently over 21 varieties), followed by camellias, daffodils in February and March, and bluebells, stunning rare rhododendrons and the famous handkerchief tree in May and June. The scent in the gardens in spring and summer can be heavenly. Within your own private garden clipped box hedge, cherry trees, copper beach and magnolias form a backdrop to very pretty borders including old-fashioned roses and some rare plants. At Christmas and New year the decorated beams and galleried landing and reflective Georgian windows provide a very special atmosphere.More

It is difficult to imagine another place with so much to offer, from sand-castle building and stone skimming on the beach (a short walk away), to stunning coastal walks to the castle ruins or the nearby town, or strolls through the magnificent gardens. The heated...More

Interaction with guests
Pavilion Cottage is within the policies of Garlieston House where we live and work. We are usually available if you need us but we respect the privacy of our guests and try to be us unobtrusive as possible. We try to greet most of our guests so that we can make sure you know where to find things and you can ask us any questions. We can recommend places to eat and things to do in the area. If you want to do something unusual for a special celebration like drive a tank, we can point you in the right direction. We can offer extra serving dishes or larger pans if you book additional Rigg Bay cottages for up to 16 guests.

About the neighbourhood
Garlieston enjoys a milder climate than most would expect for Scotland. The sunshine in Rigg Bay draws guests back year after year. You are spoilt for choice, two beaches within walking distance. Bring your camera for year round photogenic views and wildlife. From carpets of snowdrops in the winter through to daffodils, primroses and bluebells, along the forest walks and lovely woodland gardens and coastal paths. Galloway House Gardens are historic gardens within Galloway House Estate and species rhododendron, weeping beech, azalea, handkerchief tree and many other lovely trees are right on your doorstep. The local pub is open year round for a pint with a view of the harbour. In the summer enjoy the beer garden and a steak pie and chips, or catch your own fish for supper or glean mussels o...
Getting around
A car is the most convenient way to get around to see the area. Trains to Dumfries or Stranraer will join up with Stagecoach buses which stop in the village and connect the local villages and towns. Mapped cycle routes offer guests a more leisurely way of seeing the pretty country lanes leading to Rigg Bay cottages. Garlieston is on the South west Scotland 300 mile SWC300 route.
