About The House This wonderful property is in a peaceful location in the countryside, set in almost two hectares of informal gardens and woodlands and with its own outdoor heated swimming pool. Many of our guests find that they are bewitched into spending most of their holiday relaxing on the terrace or beside the pool, with perhaps the occasional stroll through the woods and surrounding countryside. However, the beautiful city of wine, Bordeaux, and Cognac with its distilleries, are within a one hour drive as are the beaches of the Atlantic coast. Pretty medieval local towns and villages (Montendre, Jonzac, Baignes) offer a variety of amenities and shops, as well as weekly markets selling fresh, regional produce. Six bedrooms offer flexible accommodation for up to fourteen people, including fully accessible ground floor bedrooms. The main house (280 sq.m) has four bedrooms, each with their own shower or bathroom facilities. Ground Floor: The ground floor is spacious and bright with beautiful main rooms - a large sitting room with exposed stone walls, terracotta tiled floor and beautiful 18th Century fireplace. Besides this is a lovely and fully equipped main kitchen/dining room, opening onto the covered terrace and pool. A large games room, accessible from the kitchen, opens to the rear to the gardens and also to the pool terrace. Also on the ground floor is the master bedroom suite with a ziplink superking size bed (or twin) and ensuite bathroom including separate walk-in shower and bath. Upstairs: There are two separate staircases leading to the large converted roof space. The older main stairs lead from the hall way (with downstairs W.C.) and open out onto a large landing with, to one side, a huge dormitory with a superking size bed, and four single beds. To the other side is the family bathroom with bath (shower over) and WC and a double bedroom with kingsize bed and ensuite shower and WC. There is also a single daybed and pull-out bed on the large landing area. Please note well: there are low door frames in this part of the house and low beams in the dormitory. The newer stairs lead up from the kitchen to a bedroom with ziplink superking size bed (or twin), ensuite shower room and separate WC. Gite The gite (75 sq.m) has a separate entrance and has two bedrooms; one with queen sized bed and the second connecting bedroom with a single bed and single child's bunk bed. There is a shower room with large walk in shower and WC. It also has its own living room and fully equipped kitchen with gas hob and oven, fridge freezer and washing machine. Amenities Outdoor, heated, saltwater infinity pool with underwater lighting, sunloungers with cushions, sunbathing terrace with covered area Two sheltered terraces with dining tables and chairs. Two large weber-style gas barbecues. Wood burning outdoor heater for cooler autumn evenings. Games room with table tennis, table football, exercise bike, board games, card table, TV, DVDs and a library of books. (Wii Sports also available on request). Outdoor games including boules, badminton and aqua polo. Telescope and binoculars available on request. Kitchen/dining room, spacious and well-equipped, including a dishwasher, American style fridge-freezer with ice-maker, gas hobs, gas and electric ovens, microwave. Sitting room with large Godin wood-burning stove, satellite TV (English and French channels), DVD, CD and Airport sound systems. Free broadband WIFI access (fair use limit). Good 3G and 4G mobile signal. Utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board. Two adult and two childrens bicycles available for use at your own risk. Please bring your own helmets. Pony rides are available when the horses are in residence. Please contact us for more details. Bed linen and bathroom towels are included. Cot and travel-type cots available (please bring your own linen). High chair. Tent and camp beds also available (on request) for kids camping out or for those who would like to sleep under the stars!More

The most beautiful house that we loved so much. The location is so peaceful. Only the birds in the woods made any noise. Although it was not the best weather, we could still sit outside under the cover and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the...More

About the neighbourhood
Although many people are seduced into simply relaxing at the gite and in the gardens, there is lots to explore on foot or bicycle of further afield by car. In the immediate vicinity of the property are woodlands of oak, chestnut, cherry and birch. Broad paths lead through the woods in several directions out to vineyards and open countryside. Small, pretty hamlets, farms and wineries are dotted across the countryside. Larger, medieval towns such as Jonzac and Montendre are within a few minutes drive with small shops, local markets and larger supermarkets. Please note: there are no shops in the village; nearest shops are 10km. Jonzac also has a thermal spa complex. Atlantic beaches and forests are only an hour drive away.
Getting around
It’s easy to explore the area on paths and tracks on foot, bicycle or on horseback (please enquire about bringing your horse or pony with you). To go further afield you will need a car, although there are bus and train services from Jonzac and Montendre to Bordeaux, Cognac, La Rochelle and Royan on the coast. We have put together various itineraries for local walks or for day trips, which you might like to explore. You will find them in the welcome pack at the property.
