About the neighbourhood
Acqui Terme is a city and commune of Piedmont, northern Italy, in the province of Alessandria. It is c. 35 km SSW of Alessandria. It is one of the principle wine-making communes of the Italian DOCG wine Brachetto d'Acqui. Acqui Terme offers excellent facilities with an abundance of amenities including shops, restaurants and bars. It has a large market twice a week and once a month an antiques market. It also has a thermal Spa with an extremely well equipped gym. The hot sulfur springs have been famous since this was the Roman town of Aquae Statiellae; the ancient baths are referred to by Paulus Diaconus and the chronicler Liutprand of Cremona. In 1870 Giovanni Ceruti designed a little pavilion, known as La Bollente, for the spot at the centre of the town where the waters bubble up at 75°C.
