UMBRIA - The Green Heart of Italy Italy's green heart, Umbria is a land unto itself, the only Italian region that borders neither the sea nor another country. Removed from outside influences and yet plenty of art and cultural heritage, it has kept alive many of Italy's old-world traditions and unspoilt landscapes. Separated from Le Marche by the jagged spine of the Monti Sibillini, it contrasts wild, in-your-face beauty with the gentle fall and rise of overlapping hills and wildflower-flecked meadows. The Etruscans, Romans and medieval feuding families have left their indelible imprint on its pretty hill towns, where history seems to creep up on you on every corner – from the Gothic wonder of Orvieto to Assisi's saintly calling. Foodies are in their element here, with the rich earthiness of the tartufo (truffle), wild asparagus and mushrooms, fine cured meats from Norcia and full-bodied local wines finding their way onto menus. Umbria hosts world-renown events in every season, ranging from Perugia's swinging jazz festival which attracts top-drawer international performers for 10 days each July, to the Spoleto festival conceived by the Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti also known as the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) in 1958. Now simply known as the Spoleto Festival, it has given the town a worldwide reputation. Events at the 17-day festival range from opera and theatre performances to ballet and art exhibitions. Truffle lovers, foodies and mooches should head to Norcia on the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March to join thousands of visitors from all over the world as they sift through dozens of booths, tasting, of course, all things truffle from Norcia, but also candies from Sicily, cheese from Tuscany and other goodies. Todi hosts a variety of events during the year. As part of the Umbria Jazz festival circuit, in July it hosts jazz concerts, as well as hosting the world Air Balloon contest which fills the sky with hundreds of wonderful colours. During August, Todi holds its own festival including contemporary and classical music concerts, theatre plays and gastronomic events throughout the town. Outdoor activities in Umbria take a whole new dimension due to its breathtaking natural beauty. Horse riding, Golf, Fishing, Tennis, Rafting, Paragliding and Mountain Biking are just some of the options at your doorstep. However, to see the slow side of Umbria, step off the well-trodden path. With a bit of pre-planning, you can sample traditional fare, find the eco-conscious destinations that only locals know about and bask in the benefits of Umbria's slow pace. Travelling to Umbria is easy, with Rome's Ciampino and Fiumicino airports providing world-wide connectivity and being only 90 mins drive from many Umbrian destinations. For the UK traveller, Ryanair flies direct from London Stansted (STN) four to six days a week into the newly renamed San Francesco d'Assisi airport (PEG), located halfway between Perugia and Assisi. All major rental car companies in Italy are represented at both the airport and Perugia's train station. the airport is also now connected to many others European and overseas destinations. TODI - The Local Area Todi is arguably the best preserved medieval village in Italy, a place of outstanding historical and natural beauty. A collage of soft-stone houses, palazzi and belfries pasted to a hillside, Todi looks freshly minted for a fairy-tale. Wandering its steeply climbing backstreets is like playing a game of medieval snakes and ladders. The pace of life inches along, keeping time with the wildflowers and vines that seasonally bloom and ripen in the valley below. Like rings around a tree, Todi's history can be read in layers: the interior walls show Todi's Etruscan and even Umbrian influence, the middle walls are an enduring example of Roman know-how, and the 'new' medieval walls boast of Todi's economic stability and prominence during the Middle Ages. The wonderful cathedrals and palaces are complemented by a wonderful piazza where you will be able to sip in the slow pace of life and enjoy a summer evening drink. Todi is famous for his restaurants, which offers exceptional regional food for the connoisseurs. Villa La quercia is located at Todi's doorstep, in an area known as Canonica, which takes its name from the Camaldolese monastery situated on the heist hilltop and neighbouring the villa. This is the best hilltop position n Todi, with uninterrupted views over the rolling Umbrian countryside, offering the peace and privacy of the countryside and yet easy access to Todi and its amenities. How to get there
Host of Villa La Quercia usually fly either to Rome or Perugia. Car rental is recommended as Umbria is a land to be discovered at your own pace whist visiting hundreds of small medieval villages, vineyards and olive mills, which are often off the tourist trail. Both airports offer full car hire service. Reaching Todi by car is easy. From Rome there is a motorway linking the airports to either Orvieto or Termi, following which a short 30mins drive will take you to Todi in an A dual carriageway road. From then the villa is on 5 mins away. Total journey under 90mins. From Perugia, there is an A dual carriageway road directly into Todi - total journey around 30mins.
