Villa Vistamontagna is a large four bedroomed house with accommodation for 8 persons, with panoramic views of the church and surrounding mountains and villages. Built about 30 years ago on a hill above the village up a long drive, it has a large sitting and dining room on the ground floor, large kitchen and utility room with a downstairs shower and toilet - just one of three bathrooms in the property. The sitting room leads out onto the large sun patio and garden with fruit trees. On the first floor is yet another large galleried sitting room which leads out onto the balcony, four double bedrooms; one with an ensuite bathroom, plus another large house bath and shower room. The balcony with its church and mountain views runs along the whole of the front of the house with an extra balcony from one of the bedrooms at the rear. Three of the bedrooms have king size beds and the fourth bedroom has two twin beds. Ski slopes and resorts on the Gran Sasso mountain of Il Corno Grande are within a 15 miles drive and the adjacent area of Campo Imperatore is known as Little Tibet for its vast plains and plateaux where wild horses roam at will. Flocks of goats and sheep guarded by the indigenous white Abruzzo sheepdogs can be spotted on the sides of the mountains. The ancient village of Capitignano boasts all the facilities you would need, bars, restaurants, butchers, bakers, but without losing its Italian mountain charm. It is surrounded by mountains, verdant fields and vineyards. The lake of Campotosto is just 7 or 8 miles away for water skiing, wind surfing and boating. And also for the adventurous there are also horseriding, cycling, walking and skiing activities to be experienced. A little known fact is that there is even an observatory together with a Particle Accelerator within the mountain range of the Gran Sasso National Park. It is difficult to convey the charm of Capitignano, with its winding streets, medieval houses and welcoming villagers. It is something to be experienced at leisure! Villa Vistamontagna is a 60 minute drive to the beautiful Pescara beaches. The sea is crystal clear and very calm. Excellent for children, play areas at each spot. Free parking. Include a visit to Rome – the Eternal City - justt a one and half hours drive away along the spectacular A24 More

We travelled out to Italy in our car and used the villa as a base in central Italy. We visited the seaside at Pescara, the ski hotel at the observatory in the Grand Sasso mountains, and the local towns. It was my ambition to cycle...More

About the neighbourhood
The village of Capitignano lies at the foot of the Gran Sasso Mountain range within two or three miles of other quaint mountain villages. It is approximately 25 km from the medieval town of L'Aquila (which means 'eagle') and about 1 and a half hours from Rome. For anyone thinking of exploring this region there are countless natural attractions in choosing to take a holiday in Abruzzo. Tourists flock to the shores while the hinterland has been developed in a more sensitive and organic fashion. Farming is concentrated on the eastern side of Abruzzo and the main produce here tends to be wheat, potatoes, olives and grapes. It is an unspoilt area with very little tourism and here you will discover the 'real Italy'. The beaches of Pescara and Giulianova are within a 1 hour drive with man...
How to get there
There are many low cost airlines that operate to Romes 2 International airports (1hour 30 mins drive) or Pescara (60 mins drive) and you will find hire car at the airport. Major international car hire companies have facilities there too. The exit from Ciampino airport couldn't be easier – just follow the signs to L'Aquila which leads you onto the spectacular A24. From L'Aquila it is a gentle mountain climb up to the Gran Sasso National Park and Capitignano Village in the foothills. A road map of the area is advisable. It is also possible to get there by train - Eurostar to Paris, then to Rome's Termini Station, then to L'Aquila. Bus to Capitignano.
