Overview
Condo/Apartment -
2 Bedrooms , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 4
Spili, Rethymnon Prefecture, Crete
The area is within a short drive of 15 glorious beaches and there are mountains and gorges and the Amari Valley to explore. The Minoan palace of Phaestos is not far and the lively resorts of Plakias and Agia Galini and the historic city of Rethymnon are each about half an hour away.

Villa Karydia is a fully-restored stone villa on the edge of Mourne. The village is traditional and has a lively kafenion and a few kassanis (raki makers). It is a small farming community but there are also a dozen foreign-owned houses. 4 km down the hill is the lively town of Spili, where there are bars and tavernas.

We have created a lovely guest suite with independent, secure access. The suite comprises two bedrooms, a shower room with basin and toilet and a private roof terrace with country and mountain views. Bedroom 1, which is air-conditioned, has a...

Interaction with guests
I am Kevin, a newly-retired Englishman. I've owned Villa Karydia since 1994 (when it was a total ruin) and I now live here from April to October or so. Either myself or local friend Gina will be here to greet you (unless otherwise arranged). The suite gives you privacy and I will, of course, respect that so, if you prefer to keep to yourselves, that's absolutely fine. I will be on hand for emergencies and, if you wish, do join me for a glass of wine or two and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of the area. I speak a little French and German and a shamefully small amount of Greek!

About the neighbourhood
Spili (just down the hill from Mourne) is a lively small town famous for its Venetian Lion’s Heads fountains where you can relax with a drink under the shady plane trees and watch the world go by. There are plenty of tavernas and bars plus three supermarkets, a swimming pool and a Health Centre in Spili. Buy some thyme honey, local raki, lace products or stylish pottery while you’re there. The delightful, low-key resorts of Plakias and Agia Galini and the historic city of Rethymnon are each about half an hour’s drive as are 15 glorious beaches, spectacular gorges and mountains. It’s a wild and beautiful area. Come here three times and you will always return. Mourne is ideally situated for exploring south and central Crete or just relaxing.
Getting around
You will need a car. There are bus services from Spili and coach or boat trips from Plakias or Agia Galini but a car is really essential to get the most out of your visit to this part of Crete.

Airport: Heraklion, Chania: 110.0 km

The small town of Spili is 27 km south of the National Road that links Heraklion-Rethymnon-Chania. The exit for Spili is just as you are coming past Rethymnon. Take the exit and then head south, away from Rethymnon. The village of Mourne (pronounced 'mooerneh” with the emphasis on the last syllable) is some 4 km above Spili, which is on the Rethymnon to Agia Galini road. It is signposted from the eastern ends of both Mixorouma and Spili. If you are coming from Rethymnon, you will turn right at the end you of Mixorouma; if you are coming from Agia Galini, you will turn left just as you are coming into Spili. I have a map of the roads in Mourne which will help you find the house. Alternatively, just find the church and call me and I will find you!
