The charm and fascination of the ancient village of Orta San Giulio are difficult to describe. Orta is the pearl and the heart of the lake. The absence of cars, the old houses with granite portals and wrought iron gates, the narrow lanes, the inner courtyards and the small, typical shops will take the visitor back to the past.
Largely unchanged for centuries Orta is simply enchanting with its typical cobbled streets and archways lined with plenty of bars and restaurants. The peace of the village is slow and unhurried and makes for a perfect place to spend a relaxing holiday.
Take a stroll through the narrow lanes to the main square (Piazza Motta) and enjoy a characteristic Italian dish, drink or excellent wines in one of the typical little cafes and restaurants which offer genuine food and hospitality. No photographs can prepare you to the magic island of San Giulio, which gleams in the water like a fabolous jewel. It is an intricate confection of narrow stone houses squeezed between fine villas with lacy wrought-iron gates and magnolias blooming at the water's edge. On the top of the Orta the Orta promontory there is the Holy mount consisting of twenty chapels in which are recreated some scenes from the life of San Francesco d'Assisi.
This unspoiled corner of Northern Italy, the breathtaking scenery, together with the artistic and cultural patrimony, will give you the feeling of an unforgettable experience.
This area also excels for the mild and healthy climate as testify the sub tropical vegetation with palms, oleanders, camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, hybiscus, hortenses, kiwiplantations and vineyards.
“CASA AL LAGO”
The “Casa al Lago” , a typical ancient building dating back to the XVIII Century is situated right in the historical center of Orta San Giulio; it overlooks Via Olina, the main street of this pretty town, and is surrounded by ancient and noble mansions, where visitors can enjoy the sight of beautiful ironworks, one of the most ancient crafts widely practised in this area.
The main entrance to the house is on Vicolo Olina, a pedestrian lane leading directly to the lakeside.
The building is just a few steps away from the picturesque Piazza Motta, nicknamed the “drawing room” with its bars and restaurants overlooking the wharf and featuring panoramic terraces from which the visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view of the magic Isle of San Giulio.
During your stay in this town of rare beauty the total absence of cars, the murmur of the waves lapping on the shore and the majestic ancient scenery will take you back in time and make you feel as if breathing a sort of Venetian atmosphere ……

The 65 sq.m. comfortable and pleasing apartment, situated on the first floor, was tastefully restored preserving the original architectonic style.
Each room is characterized by an ancient and authentic lacunar ceiling with massive beams of solid chestnut wood.
It is quite close to restaurants, bars and cocktail lounges, pubs and various stores and shops.

The flat is right in the centre of Orta San Giulio and will sleep six people, four comfortably. Orta is in a spectacularly scenic place. It is very close to the lake and a number of good and excellent eating places. The flat comes supplied with a number of useful things such as pots pans crockery glasses cutlery and the usual kitchen implements. You are issued with bedclothes to make the beds and one large and small towel each.
What's good: the shower is fantastic and the location could not be better. The owner Mariella or Maria Lina is always contactable and very friendly.
Less good: the restaurant across the way has a wood-burning stove and in the right conditions the smoke can blow in the flat, so you sometimes need to keep the windows closed. Also the street below can get noisy late on a Saturday night, which is only a problem it you go to bed early. The main bedroom is double glazed so the noise is less and the small bedroom is away from the noise.
TIP: Parking in Orta is a major issue and you will need to either rent a garage (7 euro/day) or park in the two big pay parks at 10 euros a day. HOWEVER being crafty you can get one of the white parking spaces which are free, you need to get there late at night at the weekend or after 6-ish during the week and try not to move the car.
