Casa Marconi

Holiday Rental House -
1 Bedroom , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 4
Rome, Lazio
This characterful house was built around 200 years ago, its back nestling against Il Monte, one of the rocky outcrops that characterise this side of the smal town of Capena. You can still see and feel the natural curves of the tuff (a type of rock consisting of consolidated volcanic ash) in the rear walls of the cantina on the ground floor and the bathroom upstairs.

Both floors are almost entirely open plan, giving this compact house a very airy feel. The property has central heating and is fully restored with exposed beams. High speed wireless internet makes it ideal for those who wish to keep in touch with friends or do a little work while on holiday. The house is proving very popular as a writer's retreat: it offers all the benefits of a cosy and peaceful bolthole with plenty of friendly local colour when you open the door.

About the neighbourhood
Capena is a thriving village of 5,500 inhabitants near the Sabine Hills. Despite its proximity to the city centre (it lies just 35km north of Rome along the Via Tiberina) the village retains a very distinct rural flavour – and many of the older residents have hardly ever set foot in the metropolis.

The apartments are located in and around the town’s ancient Rocca, a rocky outcrop that initially housed a medieval fortress and settlement, later superseded by a Renaissance monastery. The monastery was gradually sold off to private individuals – many of them artists – in the seventies. One of the best-known artists living and working in Capena today is Rosina Wachtmeister. The sixteenth-century building then became the heart of a small separate community made up of a picturesque jumble of ho...
