About the neighbourhood
Westport is one of the few planned towns in the country designed by the architect James Wyatt in 1780. It is a three-time overall winner of the National Tidy Towns Competition and was voted “best place to live in Ireland” in an Irish Times poll. Take a stroll around the town centre with it’s cheerful, multi-coloured shopfronts and an attractive selection of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants.
An old disused railway line from Westport to Achill has now been converted into the Great Western Greenway (42km (26mls). It offers traffic-free cycling through some of the most remote, beautiful countryside in the west of Ireland – enjoy the views of the coast, mountains and bogs as you cycle along with lots of opportunities for refreshments.
