Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Church cottage Ayr
Lovely traditional 2 bedroom cottage with enclosed garden. Walking distance from Ayr Town centre and Ayr beach. Anne the host is very accommodating and responds quickly. Next to Dairy cottage, another of Anne's properties as well, if you need an additional property to rent. Recommended.

Disappointed
The cottage was cute, well located and clean so we were so pleased. The owner just turned up after our arrival to offer his help for something we needed. He was kind and friendly.
In the advert it was advised that £10 would be charged for using the towels. So we carried our own towels. Why would it be charged for using the towels and not the bed linen? They said it was due to the Covid. So, if we had the virus (we don't) the virus won't be in the sheets but it will be in the towels? It doesn't make any sense.
Then we saw the sign in the shower asking us to dry the shower with the towels after every shower. I can't do that with my towel and dry myself next day with the same I used to dry the shower the day before. If you had provided the towels for free I would have done with pleasure. It is a good tip for keeping longer the tiles. That was disappointing. Paying for using your towels to be able to clean your shower.
Also, they asked in the guest book for leaving everything clean. Specifically saying to clean the oven, microwave, fridge, do the hoovering, clean the toilet, all kitchen surfaces...heavy cleaning in summary. We washed the dishes, brush the kitchen floor and leave everything tidy. They said in the book if you don't do that, leave £25 for the cleaning. Seriously? After paying £498 for a week the cleaning was not included? They should have said that in the advert and we wouldn't have booked this cottage.
I think the requests don't make sense. We took care of the property but asking for heavy cleaning was not reasonable at all.

Excellent week in Ayr
Ideal rental for the week. Everything you need for a couple and two dogs. Big bonus was the enclosed garden for the dogs. Within walking distance both of the town centre and the beautiful Ayr beach. I recommend this to anyone without hesitation. Kind thanks to Nicola and her mother Anne for being wonderful hosts. Hope to book again in the future if we are this way again for a break.

Not Pet Friendly worst holiday to date!
We travelled for thirteen hours to this house for a family wedding only to find we were unable to get in despite an email sent to the person (Nicola) taking the booking who turns out to be the daughter of the owner Mrs Ann Hardie. The owner turned up after i phoned the number provided some two hours later after sending the email. Prior to booking it was made clear that we were travelling long distance with three dogs and when we met the owner it became obvious from the start she was anti-dog, as she stated she did not like dogs and was not happy to have my three dogs staying and made it quite clear we were not welcome, but as the booking had been made she would allow us to stay but refused any refund if we wanted to go somewhere else.
The beds had not been made and there was no bed linen to make the beds, we had to wait for the owner to return to her own house which is within five minutes walking distance of the cottage to return with bedding and then proceeded in an attempt at teaching my partner how to make a bed. The bathroom did not have any mats down I had to use one of my own towels for this, the owner did not drop bath mats around until the Friday. There was hand wash in the bathroom which had been watered down, and a quarter of a toilet roll supplied, had to purchase my own. I even had gone and bought my own quilt cover and sheets as the bedding provided was not exactly the cleanest, the double quilt which was provided was heavily stained.
The furniture is not the best, looks like it has come from a second-hand shop, kitchen is dated and tired needs refreshing, kitchen was not exactly clean had to clean down counter tops before using, fridge was not even switched on for our arrival. In the corner of the living room is a pay phone which I have not seen since the eighties, when drinking in the local bars.
After settling down to get some sleep we awoke late afternoon early evening on the Thursday, whilst sitting around the dining table we glanced out the rear window to find the owner wandering around the garden unannounced with a black bag in her hand and wearing black gloves, when asked what she was doing she claimed she was putting out bins which she wanted us to do and bring back in.
Now being a former resident of South Ayrshire and i know how strict the council are about waste bins, these should not be placed out before 0730 on the day of collection and certainly not the night before.
We felt very uncomfortable and uneasy staying in this house, you are watched on three sides from the house opposite, which is a kitchen window looking directly into the cottage and from a rear garden, where a man was to be seen parading up and down the garden opposite and texting on a mobile whilst standing watching the rear of the cottage. There were also people watching on the house which faced onto the garden.
On the Saturday after returning from Girvan beach and visiting family, we decided to relax in the garden. We had barely been sitting outside 5 minutes, when one my dogs started to roll around the grass having a fit and frothing at the mouth, luckily, I knew what I was doing and got her out of the fit and took her back into the house and got her settled and brought back to normal. Later in the evening I let the dogs out prior to retiring for the evening, the same dog started having another fit which was not as bad as the first fit.
Early on the Sunday morning the dogs had gone back into garden and the same dog took another fit in the exact same spot as the previous evening, which was even worse than the previous, after this I refused to have this particular dog in the garden. I had taken all my dogs to the local beaches and parks, without any issues or fits. At the bottom of the garden there is a shed, which has a padlock on it, on the Saturday I noticed before the dog started fitting I noticed the padlock on the shed had been disturbed and mentioned this to our dog sitter whom went and looked at this and found an orange spray bottle marked in pen as roundup, but could have contained any chemical product. Prior to this evening the dog which I have had from eight weeks old has had no health issues and has had none since returning back to our own home. Upon returning from this trip we got Veterinary advice and were told the dog is healthy and what happened in this garden was environmentally related.
On the Sunday evening the owner visited the cottage making demands for cleaning money, which equated to sixty pounds cash in hand, I was informed the reason for this was they did not want to put this through Trip Adviser as they would take a percentage off it. The way this money was asked for was not exactly the best, it then led to a major argument between me and the owner who then ran off to get her Dr husband involved in her affairs.
During conversations with them it transpired the owner had been in the property whilst we had been out and complained that we had left the property with the heating on. Whilst the arguments had been taking place my partner had been washing some towels and linen which the owner snatched out of my partners hands still soaking wet. The owner then disappeared with the washing and the spray bottle which was found in the shed.
When confronted about the issues in the garden with my dog, they tried saying, they don’t use any chemicals in the garden as it is totally organic. The owner’s husband was to later return with a box of weed killer from Wilko, which looked to be a new unopened box and was to state this is what had been used by their gardener.
After staying at this property I would advise all owners of Springer Spaniels to avoid this like the plague, the dog which had the fit in their garden is a Springer Spaniel and we all know they have heightened senses so will smell any chemicals used more easily than other dogs.

Just as we hoped!
This was excellent and suited us well. As a disabled man I had to be careful when ascending and descending the stairs but I managed very well.

Location was the key for booking the accommodation.
We had stayed in the accommodation in 2003 and enjoyed the location and amenities, however, the property could benefit from some cosmetic refreshing i.e new linen, curtains, paint. Hosts were delightful though and addressed any concerns we had immediately i.e replacing the leaking kettle and sorting out the TV issue. Off street parking was a definite benefit.

From the north, travel south towards Glasgow and join the M77/A77. At the junction between the A77 and the A70, turn right into Ayr. Stay on Holmston Road (A70) all the way into Ayr - the River Ayr is on the right.
At a large double roundabout (opposite the station) turn LEFT and then immediately RIGHT.
The road crosses the railway line into Ayr town centre.
At the ESSO PETROL STATION, follow the one way system round to the LEFT; go down the hill, turn LEFT at the traffic lights into Beresford Terrace; after 100 metres fork RIGHT at the school into Midton Road. Continue along Midton Road for 200 metres, take the road down the LEFT hand side of St Columba’s Church (Carrick Park); then turn into the first opening in the wall on the right hand side (approx 100 metres). Church Cottage is the 3rd house on the right hand side & the 2 parking spaces are on the left.
By train
Ayr is on a main line from Glasgow (Central Station). Trains run every 30 minutes (60 minutes on Sunday) and the journey takes about 45 minutes.
From Ayr station it is 400 metres to Church Cottage.
- Taxis wait on the main road outside (short journey)
- On foot: cross the square; pass the Odeon cinema; turn left in front of the Royal Bank of Scotland (into Beresford Terrace); and follow the pavement; after 100 metres fork right at the school into Midton Road; continue along Midton Road for 100 metres, take the road down the left hand side of the St Columba’s Church (Carrick Park), after 100 metres turn into the opening in the wall on the right hand side, Church Cottage is the 3rd house on the right hand side.

From Prestwick Airport to Church Cottage is about 5 miles.
By car: turn left on leaving the airport and travel straight through the towns of Prestwick and Ayr. Approaching Ayr town centre, when you see Lidl and Brantano shops on the right, prepare to turn right at the large roundabout with the Police Station on the corner - turn right. Then turn left, cross the River Ayr and go straight through the town centre. When the shops finish, go 1 more mile along a tree lined road; the Ellisland Hotel is on a corner on the left – turn left there into Bellevue Road; go to the top and turn right into Midton Road. Continue along Midton Road for 100 metres, take the road down the left hand side of the St Columba’s Church (Carrick Park), after 100 metres turn into the opening in the wall on the right hand side, Church Cottage is the third house on the right hand side.
