The cottage dates back to 1820 and yet has been extremely well maintained and looked after - with all the mod cons! The kitchen/breakfast room is particularly lovely and has pretty views over the garden and is very spacious. All of the appliances you could need are here - including integral dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer and of course a hob and double oven. There is a spacious and cosy lounge/dining room with ornamental fireplace, beamed ceilings throughout, comfy sofas, TV with numerous digital channels, WiFi, and a desk with leaflets on the local area and further seating. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms, again, boasting glorious beams throughout and are very charming. The master bedroom features a kingsize bed, the second bedroom has twin beds which can also be a superking bed if required. Both bedrooms have plenty of storage for your clothes and personal items. There is also a bathroom with a bath - ideal for a bubbly soaking after a long Lake District walk - plus a shower over. The garden is fully enclosed and private and there is plenty of room for you to bring your bikes - and probably anything else like a canoe etc.. - just ask us! We love the fact that Ullswater is around a 15 minute scenic drive from the cottage and our favourite day out is a day on the Ullswater Steamers, combined with a walk along the Ullswater Way! However, equally, the Pennines are the backdrop of the cottage, and if you want to head away from the crowds that can sometimes gather in the summer, then a delightful stroll around Pennine country may be just what you need! Likewise, Keswick is only a relatively short, scenic drive away - we recommend a boat trip, a hike up the famous Cat Bells, followed by a pub lunch or dinner in the fantastic town centre. There's so much to do - you'll need to keep coming back to do more! :)

Pleasant Stay
Don't expect fantastic views from this cottage because it's not that sort of place however it's very convenient & central for most places that the north of England has to offer. We visited the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Gretna from here, the scenery was stunning, lots of quaint little villages and none of it was too far. We did a train journey from Appleby (part of the Carlisle to Settle line) no hassle with parking & £2 all day and Appleby itself is well worth exploring. The kitchen in the cottage is where we spent most of our time when we were in. It's very well equipped, large, comfortable chairs & table & a small tv to watch. Although the lounge was nice ,at our age we found the two settees a bit difficult to get out of as they were really low. On the whole the cottage was lovely but there were a few minor maintenance issues and for this reason I couldn't give it a five .

Thank you for taking the time to review us and I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay! Although we don't have views from the cottage, we are in a sweet little village and there are lovely views of the Pennines just down the road on one of our regular walks to Long Marton. I'm glad you got out and about during your stay and visited lots of different places! We love the proximity to Ullswater and spend much of our time there during our stay, but you are right, there are plenty of other places to explore! We do pride ourselves on keeping the property well equipped and maintained but if there are any little things that need doing then please do say - we respond very quickly as it's our priority! Many thanks again for staying, all the very best, Chloe

Fantastic Cottage
Whilst not in the Lake Distruct National Park, we found the location to be ideal - close to Penrith and easy to access either the Lakes or the Pennines which are equally as beautiful (and less busy!). This is a fantastic cottage, very well equipped and feels like home from home. We liked the lack of do's and dont's and it felt like the owners really wanted us to be comfortable and enjoy our stay. The enclosed sunny garden was ideal for post walk drinks and was safe for the dogs. The owner supplied a suggested list of walks and outings, most of which we did which was great as we were not familiar with the area. The only problem is that the weather was too hot for us to light the fire, so we will just have to go back in the winter!

A beautiful, peaceful, idilic cottage surrounded by the scenic views of the lake district.
Beautiful cottage, with lots to see and do in neighbouring towns, visited Windermere, Keswick, Appleby and Penrith town. Ideal for the fanatic cyclist to cycle the highest piont in England they can cycle and kayaker or canoeist to hire a boat on Windermere. You will not be disappointed by the beautiful cottage that has everything you need and if you like to cook you will be impressed with the glorious kitchen.

Thank you so much for your review!! So pleased you had such a lovely time in the cottage :)) I didn't realise you could cycle to the highest point in England from here, so that's a bonus!! I'm glad you loved the kitchen too - it's definitely the place to ignite your culinary skills! Hope you manage to come and stay again. All the best, Chloe x

Just fab all round!
A great location for the north lakes! We only had a short break but the cottage was so comfy and cosy - so much nicer than staying in a hotel and for half the price! The kitchen was well equipped and the owner was very accommodating to our needs! We were even left a lovely welcoming gift in the kitchen! Just fabulous! We definitely felt like we had found a little gem! Perfect for our needs!
Thank you so much!

Wonderful home from home
Lovely cottage with excellent facilities.
Setting/location is a very lovely village with good walks for the dogs.
Lovely pub/restaurant in walking distance, although their menu is a little on the pricey side for what they offer.
Would definitely stay here again and fully recommend this lovely cottage.

About the neighbourhood
There is simply so much to do in the area, you won't have time to do it all! We are situated a very short drive from Ullswater - around 15-20 minutes, and we highly recommend a day out walking the Ullswater Way, combining it with a boat trip and of course a well-earned bite to eat out. Keswick and Grasmere are also favourite days out. There is also lots to do immediately from the cottage - there is a Michellin-listed bistro right at the end of the road which is hugely popular with our guests. A stroll along the River Eden brings you out at Temple Sowerby - ideal for stopping at a traditional pub.
Or why not bring your bikes? The cottage has plenty of storage for them and it is absolutely ideal cycling country right from the door!
Getting around
We do recommend you bring your car with you to the cottage as it will really help you enjoy all the Lakes have to offer. However, there is plenty to do right from the door, from lovely walks, local restaurants and historic houses - why not bring your bikes with you for a true adventure? The Pennine countryside is particularly well-suited for cycling - as well as walking, so you needn't venture further afield if you don't want to!

How to get there
Access to Kirkby Thore is easy - we send guests a detailed, guided route to the cottage. You can opt to come off at junction 40 of the M6 and drop down from Penrith, or personally, our favourite way to come to the cottage is via junction 38 and travel through the stunning villages of Orton and Appleby.
