We keep coming back to this place every year. Cockermouth is a hidden gem in the Lake District and this cottage is our favourite. It is a few seconds' walk to excellent coffee, pubs, and strolls up the River.

About the neighbourhood
There is a very good vegetarian restaurant in the centre of Cockermouth, called the Quince and Medlar, which we can thoroughly recommend. It is only about 5 mins walk maximum from the Cottage and is well worth a visit. It is best to book in advance if you can. The Bitter End pub is on Kirkgate and is only about 2 mins walk away and is also well worth a visit. Main Street in Cockermouth is a very good shopping centre with a lot of excellent independent shops. Wordsworth House (National Trust) is also within easy walking distance. Keswick is about 20 minutes drive away. Cockermouth is situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park, which is very accessible. It is a very useful base for touring.
Getting around
Using a car is the most convenient way to travel, but there several buses which go through Cockermouth and which stop on Main Street in the centre of the town, making it possible to travel around without a car, to certain places such as Keswick and then to Kendal. There are also buses to Carlisle, Whitehaven, Workington, Penrith etc. The 555 from Keswick to Kendal follows a scenic route, as does the bus from Cockermouth to Keswick. One of the buses from Cockermouth goes through Bassenthwaite village.
