It offers privacy, space and the opportunity to relax in a stunning rural setting, while being just 5 minutes away from the welcoming village of Mapua, with its picturesque wharf, popular cafes and restaurants and unique shops and galleries. Half way between Nelson and the Abel Tasman National Park, our holiday cottage provides the ideal base from which to explore the Nelson-Tasman region. Enjoy the many beaches; sample the region's food and wine; visit the bustling Nelson Saturday market; tour the wineries and art outlets; have fun cycling, kayaking or walking in the area or tramping in one of the region's three National Parks. The possibilities are endless, hence many visitors choose to return. Suitable for short breaks, extended stays and anything in between. Ideal for couples, families or friends travelling together. Mapua Heights Cottage has two bedrooms and a light and warm feel. It is built on principles of passive thermal design. Timber from local and renewable sources is used extensively in ceilings and joinery, and is finished with natural oils. The living area is open-plan. New Zealand art and sculpture feature in the cottage. Outside, there is a generous deck and garden area where you can sit, relax and enjoy a drink (perhaps a local wine) or a barbeque. Take time to watch the sunsets. As the views of sea and mountains fade, watch the twinkling lights of Nelson emerge and be mesmerised by the stars of the Milky Way and Southern Cross in our dramatic night sky. Extensive native planting and a large area of regenerating bush attracts native birds such as tui, fantail, silvereye and at certain times of year, bellbird and shining cuckoo. We even have glow-worms in our gully - Ken is happy to be your guide! Deer and sheep graze our paddocks - let us introduce you. 'A gem among gems! A fantastic setting, Sam especially enjoyed the animals- particularly the guinea fowl! A short walk into the Dingley Dell to see the glow worms- magical. Great hosts- friendly and knowledgable- what more can we say but thanks!' (Coster family, UK & NZ) Owners, Vivien and Ken, are on site to ensure your comfort and provide local knowledge. More

Ken, the owner, showed us his bees, introduced us to Nina (his pet deer), and took us to see his glow worms one evening. The accommodation was excellent, the views were stunning and Ken & Vivien even arranged nice sunny weather for us.

About the neighbourhood
A convenient 5 minute drive to Mapua and 25 minutes from Nelson City to the East and the Abel Tasman National Park to th West, our holiday cottage provides the ideal base from which to explore the Nelson-Tasman region. It is 20 minutes from Nelson airport which has frequent flights to the main centres in New Zealand such as Wellington (35 mins), Christchurch (50 mins) and Auckland (75 mins). For those travelling by car to or from the North Island there is a car and passenger ferry between Picton (in the Marlborough Sounds) and Wellington. The drive from Picton to Mapua is approximately 2.5 hours.
How to get there
To find us is easy. From Richmond follow the coastal highway toward Motueka. Keep heading west past the turn off to Mapua until you see Gardner Valley road on the left - take this turn-off. Old Coach Road is the next left off Gardner Valley and our number (414) is on the letter box about a kilometre and a half down Old Coach road. Follow the road past our house and you'll find the cottage behind the shrubbery.
