Cape Breton Highland Retreat

Cottage -
1 Bedroom , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 4
Pleasant Bay, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
The rustic off-grid lifestyle here isn't for everyone though it's mighty cosy and a perfect getaway for self-reliant singles and couples. But make no mistake, there's no flush toilet, electricity, TV, or cell service, and the nearest WiFi hotspot is a 5-mile drive. There is an outhouse and an outdoor on-demand hot shower and an outdoor clawfoot tub with a sunset view, but if you depend on a fully modern bathroom you won't be happy here. If you want to get away from the modern zoom zoom zoom then you'll have found paradise. There's a landline for emergencies, but let go of all that — tune in to the eagles, moose, and whales cruising by, and listen to the babble of the brook or the waves crashing on the rocks below.

The lookout cabin sits atop an 85 foot cliff overlooking the warm summer waters of the Gulf of St Law...

The location is stunning and the stay is rustic but still comfortable. The outdoor shower overlooking the bay is, by itself, worth the stay. The cottage was well equipped. We saw beautiful wildlife nearby (whales, moose, owls, eagles) and the sunsets were indeed spectacular. We...More

About the neighbourhood
The Lower End neighborhood is a 2 mile gravel road on the edge of the Pollets Cove wilderness area. There is a scattering of homes and cabins as well as the Tibetan Buddhist monastery called Gampo Abbey which is open for tours in the summer months. The road ends where the Pollets Cove wilderness trail begins.

How to get there
Airport: Halifax: 450.0 km
From the causeway onto the island stay on the Transcanada to Baddeck then turn east at the Red Barn to follow the Margaree River valley down to Margaree Harbour. Or alternatively, from the causeway take the coast road (Ceilidh Trail) to Margaree Harbour and join the Cabot Trail there. Continue NE through Cheticamp (last gas, groceries, and cell coverage) where you enter Cape Breton Highlands National Park. For the next 25 miles you'll enjoy some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery on the east coast. When you exit the Nat'l Park and come to the crossroads of Pleasant Bay, turn off the Cabot Trail and continue on the coast road NE to Red River and the Lower End neighbourhood.
