In addition to the hill forts, there are many later archaeological sites demonstrating the areas violent past. At Dorchester, there are the remnants of a Roman fort. The Saxons followed the Romans and also made it a fortified settlement there. Then there's Wallingford Castle, one of the first Norman castles to be built in England. The River Rapids service between Henley and Oxford via Wallingford stops at the end of our lane (about a 5 minute walk to the lodge). The Oxford Tube bus service which runs from Oxford to Victoria station in London via the M40 motorway stops at Lewknor which is only 6 miles away. There are local taxis that can collect from there or alternatively take the scenic off-road walk to us via the Ridgeway/Icknield Way. Why not bring your bike on the train and cycle to us?
