Holiday Rental House
A gem of a cottage in tiny Thwaite, in upper Swaledale, Westholme is beautifully furnished and decorated, with all the comforts of home. As the owner says, small, but perfectly formed, the cottage sleeps up to four people in two dble bedrooms. There are electric storage heaters, and an open fire in the living room, so the cottage is a lovely, cosy place to return to after a hard day's hiking in the surrounding wonderful scenery. Dogs are most welcome (the owner even provides dog throws to put on furniture!), free wifi, parking space and great walks direct from the door, including on the Pennine Way. Week bookings can run from any day, as long as we can fit them in. We welcome short breaks, including 2 nt breaks, but you need to contact me for a 2 nt price. The lovely comfortable sofas in the living room surround the open fire (starter pack of logs and coal included), and the galley kitchen is well-equipped and beatifully decorated (sorry, no washing machine or dishwasher). The (only) WC is off the kitchen ie downstairs. Upstairs is the master bedroom, spacious and attractively furnished, with the (only) shower room off it ie ensuite. The other bedroom upstairs is a small dble (4'). Thwaite is a lovely, friendly village, overlooked by magnificent Kisdon. Plenty of walks direct from the village, along the Pennine Way to Keld, or over Great Shunner Fell to Wensleydale, or gentle rambles through the meadows amongst Swaledale sheep and lambs. The Kearton Country Hotel, just yards from the cottage, is highly regarded for food and drink and a mobile fish and chip van calls on Fridays, 8 - 8.30pm. Muker is a mile away, with a village shop/tearoom, Swaledale Woollens (items all knitted locally using Swaledale sheep wool), gallery/craft shop and good pub, with enthusiastic new owners, the Farmer's Arms (dog-friendly). Keld is 2 miles further updale, with Keld Lodge serving food and drink and ice creams and refreshments at Rukins, Park Lodge. Lovely walks between Keld, Thwaite and Muker, or further, to Gunnerside. Ghyllfoot Tearoom and Mary Shaw's Cafe serve food throughout the day in Gunnerside, and the King's Head, Gunnerside, is reopened, dogs welcome (good value lunchtime baguettes). The Punch Bowl at Low Row, 7 miles, and the CB Inn, Arkengarthdale, are gastropubs serving upmarket food and drink and there are numerous pubs, tearooms, village shops, garages, Post Office, organic bakery, etc at Reeth, 11 miles (and a Friday market). Hawes is 6 miles over the Buttertubs pass, in Wensleydale, with a variety of shops, the Ropemaker's, Wensleydale Creamery, selling renowned Wensleydale cheese, antique shops, bank (with cashpoint), garage and little industrial estate, Tuesday market. Supermarkets at Leyburn, 20 miles (Co-op and Campbells), Richmond, 23 miles, Lidl, Kirkby Stephen, 11 miles and late-opening Tesco's at Catterick Garrison, 23 miles (which delivers, as do Asda and Sainsburys. Ghyllfoot Tearoom (Gunnerside) can provide frozen 'bistro-style' meals - see FAQs. Dales Bike hire/cakery at Fremington, 13 miles, free wifi in the cottage. Mobile fish and chip van calls every Friday evening around 8pmish. The only nearby mobile signal is EE, but please note, this runs out below Muker; there is no mobile signal at all in Thwaite or immediate surrounding area. There is a payphone in Thwaite, cards only. Recycling facilities at Muker and Keld. Westholme is a charming holiday cottage in beautiful Swaledale, the most northerly of the Yorkshire Dales. Dogs welcome, free wifi. Week bookings can run from any day, assuming we can fit them in. Short breaks welcome, including 2 nts, although you need to contact me for a 2 nt price.More

About the neighbourhood
There is no shop in Thwaite. There is the Kearton Country Hotel, where you can eat and have a drink, but the nearest pub is the Farmer's Arms in Muker, a mile away (25 min walk through the fields). Muker also has Muker Village Shop and Tearoom, Swaledale Woollens, The Old School Craft Shop and Gallery, and the Literary Institute, with local photos on display. Hawes is 6 miles over the Buttertubs, in Wensleydale, a small market town, with local shops (Spar, Elijah Allen), bank (with cashpoint), cafes, quite a few pubs (White Hart is our favourite), antique shops, electrical shop, market on Tuesdays, petrol station, the Dales Countryside Museum, the Ropemaker's and the Wensleydale Creamery, where world renowned Wensleydale cheese is made.
Getting around
A car is necessary, although the Little White Bus Company does run a good service up and down Swaledale (timetable is in the village and online). There are good walks from Keld downdale; take the bus up to Keld and walk back. There are direct walks from the door, including the Pennine Way, and the Coast to Coast Walk is nearby.
