Holiday Rental House
This is a truly unique Santorini house set in a private Mediterranean garden and accessed through an electronic gate and private driveway. The domed and barrel shaped Cycladic architecture on the upper floors echoes the ancient designs of indigenous cave dwellings and the many Orthodox churches that dot the island. Tranquil and discreet, it has shaded balconies and a serene setting awaits those seeking rest; whilst a squash court [the only one on the island] awaits the active. The villa has one of the very best Caldera settings 250 meters up the cliff with a clear unobstructed view across the sea, to the volcano and the islands beyond. The house is located on the edge of the working village of Megalochori which boasts many restaurants, shops and bakeries. The house has 6 double bedrooms [4 in the main house and 2 in the attached guest house]. The property boasts three living rooms and two kitchens and a washing machine room and a small 'office' area for those who are truly unfortunate in holiday time. For those requiring modern/electronic accessories: TV with DVD player and music docks are also supplied as are hair dryers and iron/board. Megalochori [literally translated as 'Big Village'] lies half way between Fira [the capital) and the sheltered beaches of the south of the island at Vlychada, Perivolos and Perissa. The nearest beach [Caldera Beach] is visible from the terrace and a short drive away. The two main inland villages of Pyrgos and Emborio are also a short drive away. Car rental is strongly suggested. The villa gives the best ringside seat for the famed sunsets whilst enjoying the outdoor pool on the Caldera. Then after dusk you find yourself sitting on one of the many terraces and seeing the glistening lights of Fira, Oia and Akrotiri as they sit perched dramatically on the edge of the cliff as indeed are you. The house creates much of its own electricity and hot water via solar systems. Rainwater is also harvested. Grey water harvesting is also being installed. Heating and Cooling is via air source heat pumps. All electricity cables on the property are buried underground and there are no overhead cables to spoil any view in the garden which has pines, olive, pomegranate, dracs, almond, fig and many other trees and bushes as well as a pond with water lilies buzzed by dragonflies. 2 of the bedrooms are located on the upper level and the other 4 are on the lower level. All bedrooms and bathrooms have direct sunlight through windows and two of the bedrooms also have french windows. The house is surrounded by vineyards on 2 sides and there are only 2 adjacent properties both of which are set back from the house. Pool cleaning is every 2nd day and house cleaning is provided midweek for those staying 7 nights. A local lady from the village can be booked to cook traditional Greek meals in the kitchen utilising herbs that grow in the garden [oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage]. This house is for you if you want pleasant surprises and something different from the 'Western' city norm. It is for you if you like stone walls sprouting wild herbs and for nature to enter the realm of your senses whilst you take in the stunning setting. Its a peaceful retreat in the heart of a bustling island. Please note that this is a real home and that weddings and related events cannot be hosted here. When we selected The Dome House for our group of 12 friends, we held our breath and crossed our fingers that the property, upon arrival, would even come close to the pictures, descriptions, and reviews from former guests who've stayed here. Not only were we...More

Had the pleasure to spend (5) days with good friends at this amazing location. When I say the views left me speechless, I am not exaggerating. Though the road leading from New Port is a bit menacing, once you arrive on this property, your cares...More

About the neighbourhood
Megalochori [in Greek it simply means Big Village] is a traditional settlement with ancient pre christian roots. More importantly for this age, it is a working viilage and hence has permanent shops with two nearby supermarkets and also has 2 bakeries as well as several restaurants and facilities range from a 5 star hotel to a kebab shop. It is surrounded by vineyards and has over a dozen domed churches and a beautiful village square. It boasts 3 wineries -and several art/crafts shops for visitors. Yet it retains its character as it is not overrun as other parts of the island have become at certain times of the year.
