About the neighbourhood
Rakalj is a small village on the western shore of the bay Raša on the southeast coast of Istria, 12 km northeast of Marcana and 25 km from Pula. It was first mentioned in 1190. It was once known for its traditional Istrian ceramics, whose traditions were revived for tourism purposes, and for sailors and fishermen. Visitors are attracted by its cultural and historical attractions (the baroque parish church built in the 18th century, castle ruins Rakalj) and ethnographic collections housed in the house of the scientist and writer Mijo Mirkovic (Mate Balota). Old Rakalj is located near the sea, on a hill in Raška bay, next to the ruins of Old Rakalj is the church of St. Agneze from the year 1495.
The nearest big town is Pula, only 30 km away. The most famous and important monument, the starting and ending point of every sightseeing tour is the Amphitheater, popularly called the Arena of Pula, which was once the site of gladiator fights. It was built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the magnificent Colosseum in Rome. Other attractions to see: Temple of Augustus, Golden Gate, Historical and Maritime Museum, Gate of Hercules, Twin Gates and City Walls. The most famous manifestation is Film Festival in Amphitheater, under the stars.
