Bordanoost Lodge provides an excellent base for exploring the fascinating island of Unst. Measuring approximately 12 miles long by 5 miles wide, Unst has a population of around 600, who in spite of the island’s small size and remote location, enjoy an excellent range of amenities, including a leisure centre with indoor pool and medical centre which are mainly based in Baltasound the main settlement which is a couple of miles to the south.

The accommodation is set over looking Haroldswick bay with superb views. It is set on the side of a pebble beach with abundant birdlife, otters and seals that can be observed from the house's windows, the expansive walled garden and sun lounge. The accommodation provides an ideal base for walking, cycling, fishing, observing wildlife and investigating the rich and diverse history of the island of U...

Our first visit to Unst, indeed Shetland, keen to walk the cliffs and experience the seabirds. Very impressed by the nearby Unst Heritage Centre and the geology presentations - Unst is very unusual and complex. The house was an ideal place to stay.

The house is large and comfortable, with a big modern kitchen, three ensuite bedrooms, comfortable beds, and a log-burning fireplace (though it would be helpful to know before arrival that guests are expected to bring their own logs). The views are splendid, looking right out...More

About the neighbourhood
Unst is the most northernly island in Britain. It is thought to be the first foot-fall of Vikings in the North Atlantic. There are the remains of at least 60 longhouses, the highest density of rural Viking sites anywhere, including Scandinavia. Haroldswick, like all of Shetland, is rich in the remains of our past. Guests who are interested in the heritage of the area can explore our own ice house. Our Viking enthusiasts can walk a few hundred yards from Bordanoost to visit The Skidbladner (replica Gokstad ship), and the Viking Longhouse reconstruction. Both provide a focal point for visitors and residents from which they can explore Unst’s Viking heritage. Local museums, Victoria's tea room and the local shop are a short distance away.
