About the neighbourhood
Rivalto was born as a fortress in the early medieval period and owes its name not from Ripalta or Rupe Alta , as was long believed, but rather by the stream of greater Rio, Rio Alto , which originates from a hill just outside the town . The town is in the diocese of Volterra , and is located on the border of the 'territories Archdiocese of Pisa and this fact has ignited bitter disputes over the ownership between the bishops of the two cities, the most notable in 1128 between the Archbishop of Pisa and the abbey of Morrona , then settled five years later. Rivalto held the title of Marquis granted to the Riccardi family of Florence .
In 1883 the village had 444 inhabitants.
