Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain’s premier holiday destinations. Town: Portreath, with its sheltered harbour, was a hive of activity and industry as a major tin-exporting port in the 1800s. The village's natural and craggy shoreline now draws people from all over the world. The area is characterised by high cliffs, quiet coves, and sandy, surf-washed beaches, with evidence of the area's strong industrial background all around. Portreath has a tiny fishing harbour, shops, a few pubs, three cafés, and a Chinese restaurant, in addition to its safe, sheltered sandy beach. Visit the cathedral city of Truro, 14 miles away, for a terrific day out, with its cobblestone streets, shopping centre, theatre, museum, and great restaurants, or travel a few miles along the coast and follow the magnificent length of sandy beach that runs down to Hayle and on to St Ives, a wonderful vacation spot.
