Salem is as safe as practically any other "suburb" in a major metropolitan area. There is an excellent police force which very effectively maintains order and incidents of violent crime are quite rare in this city of 40,000. As in any tourist destination, it is wise to safeguard valuables on one's person and in hotel (etc.) rooms; however, robbery, burglary and theft are equally uncommon. Visitors should lock vehicles, remove valuables from plain sight and park in public lots or authorized areas. Likewise, it a prudent to ask hotel (etc.) staff or an officer before heading (or just not go) into unfamiliar or the few poorly lit areas. Salem is an old city with many old homes and buildings, but most areas and neighborhoods are well-maintained and completely safe. Visitors will easily recognize and probably avoid the few neighborhoods that are not.
