Sachuest Beach (known to locals as Second Beach) is the second in a string of beaches just outside of Newport, in nearby Middletown.

There is a parking fee, but it is SO worth it, because they have a large beach house with restrooms, a snackbar (with very reaonable prices) and outdoor showers to wash away all that sand and salt after a fun day in the sun.

The beach is not wide - it's a quick skip to the water, even if you have your towel spread out at the back edge where the dunes begin. There are also several lifeguard stations dotted up and down the beach, to keep everyone safe.

Wave boarding is allowed, and you'll see plenty of beach balls, frisbees, volleyballs and sand castle building tools.

It's a great beach for kids, because there are waves, but the surf is not rough. Toddlers play in the shallows, bigger kids brave the waves and adults can wade out past all the hub bub and relax without getting swamped by the surf.

It is clean, family friendly, and the water is usually warm (for New England!).

Go as early in the day as you can, as the parking lots do fill up.
