You can catch a cab at the 24-hour taxi stand on the baggage claim level of the terminal near baggage carousel #11. There is a dispatcher there who will tell you what your exact fare will be. According to the airport’s website, there is a flat rate structure is based on mileage, and tips are appreciated, but not required. Cash, debit and credit cards are accepted. For example, a trip to the downtown or Cleveland Clinic area will cost about $34.50 plus tax and tip (figure about $40 total).

Rental Cars

Renting a car may be a good option if you are staying outside of Cleveland or you plan to venture away from downtown Cleveland and University Circle. Cab fares can add up quickly, but keep in mind that with a rental car you also will need to factor in downtown parking, which can run you $10 - $20 per day, plus tips if valet parking is used.

If you do decide to go with a rental car, it is important to note that all of the rental companies desks are located off-site at the consolodated rental car facility, so you will need to take the free dedicated shuttle first (all companies take the same shuttle), located on the baggage claim level of the terminal near exit #4. The ride is only about 5-7 minutes long and the shuttles run continuously, 24 hours per day. Most of the major rental car companies operate out of Cleveland Airport, including: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty. The website below contains more information and reservation contact information:

Shuttle Service

Shuttles are available from the airport to many hotels in Cleveland and in the region as well as to Cedar Point. However, unless it is an airport-area hotel, which typically offer free shuttle service to and from the airport, you will need to make arrangements in advance with the hotel to arrange for pick-up.

You can call your airport-area hotel upon arrival to ask for a pick-up.  The Sheraton Cleveland Airport Hotel, located on airport property, runs a continuous shuttle service from the Shuttle/Limo Lot between the terminal and Smart Parking Garage.

Kiosks on the baggage claim level have an "Accommodations" page that allow you to call several airport hotels directly, or use your cell phone.

Note: No downtown or Cleveland Clinic hotel offers free airport shuttle service, unless it is pre-arranged or part of a company/group meeting package. Take a taxi, car service or use public transportation instead.  Several hotels, both downtown and in the Clinic/University Circle area, do offer free shuttle service within several miles of the hotel.

Unless you're staying at the Breakers Hotel at Cedar Point and you don't plan to leave the park property, a rental car likely is necessary, especially as hotels in the Sandusky area don't offer shuttle service to the park.

Public Transportation

Tower City in the heart of downtown Cleveland is connected to Cleveland Hopkins Intl. Airport by the RTA Red Line rail rapid transit.  The rapid station is located in the center of the the lower level of the terminal (one level below baggage claim). There is a down escalator just opposite baggage carousel #6, a staircase on the other side (beyond the Welcome Center), as well as an elevator opposite the down escalator that will take you right to the lower level. The rapid station is approximately 30 feet ahead on the left. It is fairly well marked and says "Train to Downtown." There are two ticket machines at the entrance of the station where riders can purchase single and mulit-ride tickets, as well as all-day passes prior to boarding the train.

Cleveland's compact downtown is served by free bus trolleys.

Tower City and Public Square in downtown Cleveland is connected to Cleveland State University, the Cleveland Clinic, and University Circle attractions (including University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University, Severance Hall, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and Uptown) by the 24/7 Cleveland Healthline bus rapid, which also provides easy acces to Little Italy and Lake View Cemetery.

These and additional public transportation options are discussed in detail in the following travel article.
