Most people get around Kalamazoo by car. The immediate downtown area is ideal for pedestrian traffic, but if your planning to visit the malls, shops, and eating establishments beyond downtown, you'll want your own car. Of course, if that's not an option, you'll need to navigate the public transportation. It is available, but don't expect it to be on par with the public transportation of major cities.

If you're interested in taking the bus, it is an option. Metro Transit runs buses in Kalamazoo, Portage, and the surrounding area, but keep in mind that the number of stops and hours of operation are limited. The buses runs 6 a.m. to 10 p.m weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, with no service on Sunday. Call the Metro Transit Office (269) 337-8201 for more information.

Taxis do service Kalamazoo, but don't expect to hail one on the street. Unless it's late Friday night and you're downtown, you're probably going to have to call for a cab. There are several options. Visit for a list of cab companies and phone numbers.

There is no subway system in Kalamazoo.
