Although some of Italy's larger cities have been known to have high crime rates, especially for tourists, Trieste is not one of them.  The small city of Trieste in Italy's Friuli-Venezia region is known among locals and tourists alike as being quite safe and friendly.  That said, it is still a good idea to use common sense while visiting the city (or any city) in order to protect yourself.  There are, unfortunately, always those who prey on tourists, who often times are easy targets because of their unfamiliarity with an area.  Be especially careful to keep and eye on all bags and valuable items, not leaving them unattended for even a few minutes.  Always lock rental cars and avoid leaving anything visible in a car that may encourage a break-in.  When dining in restaurants do not keep bags on the backs of chairs and be sure to be mindful of your surroundings, and who is near you, in crowded places.
